Student answer (Band 7.0)

In today's increasingly connected world, globalisation has made it easier for people to share and adopt fashion trends across borders, influencing various aspects of modern life. While global fashion has become a widespread phenomenon, there is ongoing debate about whether this trend is beneficial or not. This essay will discuss the same before reaching to the reasoned conclusion.

One key reason for the rise of global fashion is the rapid development of communication technologies, especially social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. These tools allow users to instantly access and follow the latest fashion trends from around the world, helping them explore different cultures and develop their own sense of style. Another major factor is the advancement of global transportation. Air travel and modern public transport systems make it easier for people to travel internationally, exposing them to diverse clothing styles and allowing fashion to spread more quickly and widely.

In my opinion, the influence of global fashion is largely positive. Firstly, it brings economic opportunities to remote and developing regions. Through online platforms, unique and culturally specific fashion items can reach international markets, helping local designers and manufacturers grow their businesses. Secondly, global fashion promotes cultural exchange. People around the world become more open-minded and accepting of different traditions by embracing foreign fashion styles, which encourages international collaboration and understanding.

In conclusion, the spread of global fashion is mainly driven by advancements in communication and transportation technologies. Overall, I believe this is a positive development that benefits people both economically and culturally.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by explaining the causes of global fashion's influence and providing a clear opinion on whether it is positive or negative. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas presented are generally relevant and extended, such as the discussion on communication technologies and economic opportunities for developing regions. However, some arguments exhibit a tendency to over-generalise and could benefit from further specific support or deeper development to fully reach the higher bands. For instance, the mention of cultural exchange through foreign fashion is introduced but remains somewhat broad. The introduction also contains a slightly formulaic transition sentence about reaching a reasoned conclusion which detracts slightly from originality, keeping the task response firmly in the middle tier.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to causes, then to the writer's evaluation, and finally to a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader, such as 'One key reason,' 'Another major factor,' 'Firstly,' and 'Secondly.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct themes clearly. While referencing is generally clear and logical, the cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless, which is characteristic of this solid band level. Overall, the structural flow of the essay is well-managed and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, employing less common items with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'globalisation,' 'phenomenon,' 'open-minded,' and 'international collaboration.' Word choices are generally appropriate for an academic discussion, though there are minor slips in collocation and phrasing, such as 'reaching to the reasoned conclusion' where the preposition 'to' is unnecessary. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout the text, allowing communication to proceed smoothly without hindrance. To achieve a higher level, the vocabulary could incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical chunks and idiomatic academic collocations to elevate the overall stylistic register.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The essay exhibits a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentence forms, demonstrating a strong control over grammar and punctuation. Frequent error-free sentences are present, such as 'In today's increasingly connected world, globalisation has made it easier for people to share and adopt fashion trends across borders.' Verb forms, tenses, and subject-verb agreements are handled accurately. There is a minor lapse in preposition usage within a fixed phrase in the introduction, specifically 'reaching to the reasoned conclusion,' but punctuation and sentence boundaries are otherwise well-managed. The mix of subordination and coordination allows for fluid reading, and the grammatical control is consistent throughout the response.
