Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, the way people are dressed is strongly influenced by global fashion trends. Global fashion has such a significant impact on people's lives mainly because of globalisation and usage of social media. I personally believe that this change has negative effect.

First of all, global fasion trends have contributed significantlly to the development of fast fashion. This is mainly because people want to have clothes that are worn by the influencers and social media celebrities but they do not want to wait for them, as in few months no one will remember those trends and the new clothes will be needed. As a result of that, brands have developed the production chains that let them produce clothes and sell them within few weeks. These are produced in a countries with a low-cost workforces, which is not only unethical but also negatively impact the environment.

Another argument worth consideration is that we are no longer different and have lost what made us uniqe. The reason for that is that we all wear the same (or similar) clothes. Each and every fast fashion brand has the same type of jeans, dresses and jackets what make us all look almost identical. In the past, clothes were factor that made people look uniqe and vary, now we all wear the same Zara jeans and are proud that we have been influenced by this one popular instagram influencer. I personally believe that makes the world a boring place.

In conclusion, although the global fasion made our lives easier in a lot of ways, I believe that it has negative impact on all of us, mainly because of the growing popularity of fast fashion and due to how it made people lose their uniqueness.

Overall6.5

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, examining both the causes of global fashion influence and whether this development is positive or negative. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as discussing fast fashion, ethical concerns, and environmental impacts. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise regarding how everyone looks identical and wears the same Zara jeans, which is characteristic of this band level. To reach a higher level, the ideas could be developed with even greater depth and specific supporting examples rather than broad assertions about uniformity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, starting with the causes of fashion influence in the introduction, followed by fast fashion and environmental impacts in the second paragraph, the loss of uniqueness in the third, and a concise summary in the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'First of all,' 'As a result of that,' and 'Another argument worth consideration,' though referencing and paragraphing could be slightly more sophisticated to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended meaning with a mix of everyday and less common items such as 'globalisation,' 'influencers,' 'unethical,' and 'uniqueness.' However, there are some spelling errors ('fasion' instead of 'fashion,' 'significantlly,' 'uniqye') and occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation (e.g., 'usage of social media' instead of 'the use of social media'). To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to eliminate spelling mistakes and demonstrate a wider, more precise range of less common lexical items with fewer slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. There are examples of complex structures used reasonably well, such as 'This is mainly because people want to have clothes that are worn by the influencers...' However, several grammatical errors persist, including missing or incorrect articles (e.g., 'have negative effect' instead of 'a negative effect', 'in a countries' instead of 'in countries', 'clothes were factor' instead of 'a factor'), and preposition issues. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writer from achieving a higher band where error-free sentences would be much more frequent.
