Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, the way people dress is strongly affected by fashion trends from around the world. Fashion has a powerful impact on individuals lives because most of them choose their clothes according to the popular style. In this essay, I will discuss both sides and give my opinion.

There are a lot of positive sides, which include that there are more choices in clothing, including all the fashions and designs. They also affect creativity and ideas, which results in an increase in self-expression. As a result, a new style can become popular in many parts of the world within a short time. Furthermore, having fashion can allow people to learn more about the culture and traditions. For example, international styles will be mixed with traditional Pakistani clothes, which results in great sales.

On the other hand, there are also plenty of negative sides. Firstly, people may spend too much money on fashion, which results in poverty. Secondly, traditional clothing may become less popular and result in a loss of money, and it may discourage people. People should also be pressured to follow new fashions and trends. Strong global trends can make local cultures and traditional styles less visible. People often copy the clothing styles of famous actors, singers, and influencers, which can reduce individuality. For instance, the majority of young people will buy new clothes because of social media.

In conclusion, social media, international brands, and the internet have made global fashion highly influential. Although following fashion trends can sometimes lead to unnecessary spending, I believe the wider choice and greater creativity make this a largely positive development and make our country more modern.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the reasons for the influence of global fashion and the writer's opinion on whether it is a positive or negative development, thus displaying a clear overall stance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the essay touches on valid points such as increased choices, creativity, and the impact of social media, several arguments remain under-developed or general. For instance, the point regarding poverty caused by spending on fashion lacks specific elaboration or a convincing connection. Similarly, the idea that traditional clothing results in 'a loss of money' is unclear. To reach the next level, the writer needs to extend and support all arguments thoroughly with more detailed explanations and fully developed examples rather than relying on brief, sweeping assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into logical paragraphs, including an introduction, a body paragraph for positive aspects, a body paragraph for negative aspects, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'Firstly', which help to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'which results in'. To move higher, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences creates a smoother, more natural progression of ideas without relying on formulaic transition phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'self-expression', 'influencers', and 'individuality'. There are, however, noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, stating that excessive spending on fashion results in 'poverty' is an overstatement and an inappropriate lexical choice for the context. Phrases like 'having fashion can allow people' also show awkward word combinations. Spelling is generally accurate, but the occasional lexical slips and lack of precision in less common vocabulary prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, the writer should focus on natural collocations, precision in word choice, and expanding the repertoire of less common lexical items used with greater stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as in 'People often copy the clothing styles of famous actors, singers, and influencers, which can reduce individuality.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including minor article omissions and awkward phrasing like 'People should also be pressured', where modal usage is slightly off for the intended meaning. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater control, producing a higher frequency of error-free sentences and demonstrating advanced management of punctuation and grammatical patterns.
