IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.
How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Global fashion trends have become a significant influence on the way people dress in many part of the world. This is mainly because of the rapid growth of social media international fashion brands, which make new styles easily accessible to people. I believe that this is largely a positive development because it gives individuals greater choice and allow them to express themselves through clothing.
One major reason for the strong influence of global fashion is widespread use of digital media. Platforms such as Tiktok, Instagram and YouTube allow people to see the latest dressing trends and styles of different countries within seconds. Furthermore, celebrities and social media influencers frequently promote particular brands and outfits, encourage their follower to adopt similar style. As a result, fashion trends can spread rapidly across the national borders. For example, a clothing style worn by a popular celebrity of the United States can quickly become fashionable among young generations in Asia and European countries.
Another important reason is expansion of international fashion companies and online purchasing. Global brands advertise their products worldwide, while e-commerce websites allow consumers to purchase fashionable clothes from almost everywhere. This has made international fashion more affordable and accessible than in the past. For instance, a young person in Pakistan can easily order and discover clothing inspired by European and Korean fashion through an international online store. Therefore, global fashion has become an important part od people's everyday lives.
In conclusion, global fashion has become highly influential mainly because of social media, celebrities, international brands and growth of shopping. Although this approach can sometimes encourage excessive cinsumers, I believe it is generally a positive development because it provides greater variety to people and opportunities for self-expression.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, examining both the causes of global fashion influence and whether this development is positive or negative. The position is clear throughout the essay, beginning with a direct stance in the introduction and maintaining it until the conclusion. Main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning specific platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and illustrating how trends spread from the United States to Asia and European countries. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts of the body paragraphs, and some supporting details could be pushed further toward full depth. To reach a higher band, the arguments would benefit from deeper analysis and more sophisticated, fully elaborated examples rather than brief illustrations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the influence of digital media, followed by the expansion of international companies, and concluding with a balanced summary of the development. Cohesive devices are used quite flexibly, with appropriate transitional phrases such as 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'Another important reason' guiding the reader smoothly through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and logically to separate distinct ideas. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, referencing could be managed even more seamlessly to avoid any mechanical feel, and paragraph transitions could incorporate more subtle, sophisticated linking words rather than standard signposts.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'widespread use', 'accessible', 'e-commerce', and 'self-expression'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'many part' instead of 'many parts', 'encourage their follower' instead of 'followers', 'part od' instead of 'of', and 'excessive cinsumers' instead of 'consumers'. These lexical slips do not impede communication, but they reflect the limits of this band level. To move up to a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice, better control of word forms and pluralisation, and fewer spelling inaccuracies when attempting sophisticated vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully employing relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning. There is good control over basic structures, and communication is never impeded. Nevertheless, several grammatical errors persist, such as missing articles ('widespread use of digital media' needs 'the', 'expansion of international fashion' needs 'the') and minor preposition or agreement slips. These errors show that while complex structures are attempted, they are not yet fully mastered without frequent small mistakes. To reach the next level, the writer must produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles and subject-verb agreement.
