Student answer (Band 6.0)

A number of aspects of the way people cloth themselves today is inspired from the international fashion trends. This is largely due to social media and I believe this is a negative development.

The global fashion today has a strong influence on people's choices of what and how to wear and this is partly due to social media. The internet connectivity has made the world a global village where information are instantly available. People can easily access informations such as videos and pictures of what their favorite influencer wears everyday and how they style their hairs. Additionally, informations on where to buy these garments are easily available, making it easy for people to buy it. For example, some companies hire globally known influencers to advertise their products by shooting an ad of them wearing their product and as soon as these informations reach their followers, the sales start to grow, bringing the a global fashion trend.

I believe the influence of global trends on people's lives is a negative development especially due to its negative influence on some cultures. People feel it a privilage to follow the international trends, and they feel by not following these globsl trend they may leave behind. Therefore, the majority of people start following them, and rarely style themselves in their cultural form. For example, people in Punjab province of Pakistan, now mostly wear western dress instead of their cultural dress due to the social status they carry due to the trend, leaving their culture behind.

In conclusion, social media has played a huge role in affectively marketing the gloabl fashion trends which is adversely affecting cultures around the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain the influence of social media and clearly state that you see global fashion as negative. The examples of influencers advertising clothing and people in Punjab adopting Western dress are relevant and help illustrate your points. This meets the task well, and the explanation of how online images and shopping information spread trends is a useful development. However, the cultural impact is less fully explored: explain more specifically what may be lost when traditional clothing becomes less common, or acknowledge any benefits before weighing them against the drawbacks. A more precise link between social media exposure and people’s desire to follow trends would also make the argument more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph explaining the spread of trends, one presenting your negative view, and a conclusion. The progression from social media to consumer behaviour is generally easy to follow, and examples are placed in relevant paragraphs. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical, however, with repeated use of “Additionally,” “For example,” and “Therefore.” Some references are also unclear, such as “these informations” and “bringing the a global fashion trend,” which makes the relationship between the advertising example and the result harder to follow. Use a wider range of linking methods and make pronoun references explicit. The conclusion repeats the main points but could more clearly summarise the reasoning behind your judgement.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “global fashion trends,” “influencer,” “advertise,” “cultural dress,” and “social status.” These choices allow you to discuss both the spread of fashion and its cultural effects. However, the range is uneven, and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors reduce precision: “cloth themselves,” “inspired from,” “style their hairs,” and “privilage” are examples. The repeated use of “informations” also shows difficulty with a common countability pattern. Aim for more natural combinations such as “dress themselves,” “influenced by,” and “style their hair,” and proofread spelling carefully. More precise terms for cultural change would help you express the argument with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “where,” “as soon as,” and “especially due to,” so the response is not limited to short basic statements. The main ideas are usually understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “A number of aspects … is” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “People feel it a privilage to follow” is missing a grammatical element after “feel.” There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries, including the missing space after “trends. This” and the awkward construction “bringing the a global fashion trend.” Work on agreement, complete sentence patterns, and punctuation between sentences. Greater control of these forms would make your complex sentences clearer.
