Student answer (Band 5.5)

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends. How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives. Do you think this is a positive or negative developement.

Nowadays, most people wear clothes that are influenced by global fashion. This essay will discuss why this is happening and argue that it is mostly a negative developement.

Global fashion has become very strong because of the internet and sociial media. In the past, people only saw local clothes. Now through instagram, Tiktok and Facebook, people see what celebrities and models wear in america or europe. Brands like Nike, Zara and H&M are avilable all over the world, including in Pakistan. So, young people in Jhelum wear the same jeans or shirts as people in London or New York. Another reason is that global cheap and easy to buy online.

Second, it creates financial pressure. People want to buy expensive branded clothes just to show off. Students spent their parent's money on fashion they do not need. It also creates competition amoung friends, which is not good.

Of course, there are some positive. Global fashion connects people and given more choice. But the negative are stronger.

In my opinion, this is more negative than positive. First it damage local culture. For example, in Pakistan, our traditional dress like Shalwar Kameez is very beautiful and comfortable. But now many young people do not wear it daily because they think western clothes are more modern. So we are losing our culture.

In conclusion, global fashion influences people because of social media and international brands. Although it gives more choice, I think it is a negative developement because it harms our local culture and increase unneccessary spending

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain the influence of social media and international brands, and you clearly judge the development to be mostly negative. The examples of young people in Jhelum wearing clothes similar to those in London or New York, and the discussion of Shalwar Kameez, make the response relevant and specific. However, the explanation of how fashion spreads is more developed than the evaluation of its effects. The point about financial pressure is brief, and the positive side is only mentioned in general terms (“connects people and given more choice”). Develop these ideas with a clearer explanation or example, and make the links between each reason and your overall judgement more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure, moving from an introduction to causes, disadvantages, a brief concession, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and signposts such as “Another reason,” “Of course,” and “In conclusion” guide the reader. However, progression within the body is sometimes abrupt: “Another reason is that global cheap and easy to buy online” is incomplete, and the shift from financial pressure to cultural loss is not fully connected. The concession is also very short, so it does not balance the discussion effectively. Use complete topic sentences and connect each example back to the paragraph’s main point; vary linking expressions rather than relying mainly on basic signposts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “global fashion,” “branded clothes,” “financial pressure,” and “traditional dress.” The examples of international brands and local clothing also make the discussion concrete. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “global cheap,” “creates competition amoung friends,” and “there are some positive.” Spelling errors, including “developement,” “sociial,” “avilable,” and “unneccessary,” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the writing. Build a wider set of precise expressions for causes and effects, and proofread spelling and word forms. More varied vocabulary would help you express the ideas with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast with “Although it gives more choice” and a reason introduced by “because.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “Another reason is that global cheap and easy to buy online” lacks a complete grammatical structure, while “it damage local culture” and “it harms our local culture and increase” show problems with subject–verb agreement. The opening repeats the task questions with a full stop where a question mark is needed. Practise building complete clauses and checking agreement, verb forms, and punctuation. Greater control of these patterns would make your argument smoother and more accurate.
