IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Global fashion trends sway the way people dress in many areas. The attire of successful nations has deeply impacted people's lives, turning local styles into global fashion. However, I believe this trend creates a negative development in many countries and societies.

Countries which are not very successful copy the way the successful countries live, dress, and work. These countries believe that if they can imitate the lifestyle of successful countries, they would be able to thrive themselves. However, they forget that every country has different problems which require different solutions. For instance, democracy cannot be suitable for every country's problem; Some might need a dictatorship for instant decisions. The reason global fashion impacts people's lifestyle is that we believe in white color supremacy. In Pakistan or India, the reason we feel they are superior is that we have been ruled by them for almost a century. The other reason is that their economy is flourishing and living a better lifestyle than ours. In the end, global fashion became a strong influence on the rest of the world.

The influence of global fashion on every country is a negative development on the society. Every country has its own culture, traditions, and religious values. A Muslim country like Pakistan, cannot dress the way global fashion influences them to dress because our values contradict global fashion. Islam teaches women to cover their hair, whereas global fashion challenges that school of thought. Men are supposed to wear clothes that cover themselves as well. It impacts society negatively, as the younger generation and the older generation start having a conflict about how to dress. The younger generation wants to follow the global fashion trends, but the older generation might want them to dress modestly.

In conclusion, global fashion has a strong impact on people's lives because the trends start in successful countries and less successful countries adopt them. Global fashion has negative developments, as it creates conflict between generations and contradicts the religious values of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions and state a consistent view that global fashion is negative. The second body paragraph supports this position with a relevant example: tension between younger and older generations over modest dress. You also attempt to explain the influence through the perceived success and economic strength of countries whose styles are copied. However, this explanation is not always clear or sufficiently focused on fashion: the comparison with democracy and dictatorship distracts from the question, and the claim about “white color supremacy” needs clearer explanation. Develop the causes more directly—for example, the role of social media, celebrities, advertising, and international brands—and explain how each shapes clothing choices. Your position is clear, but some ideas are less fully developed than others.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs explaining influence and evaluating its effects, and a conclusion that restates the main points. The progression from perceived national success to cultural conflict is generally understandable, and phrases such as “For instance” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships. However, some links are mechanical, and the first body paragraph moves from copying successful countries to political systems and then to colonial history without making each connection to fashion explicit. This weakens the progression of the explanation. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as in “their economy,” where the reader must infer which countries “their” refers to. Keep each paragraph focused on one main point and use clearer links between evidence and the question.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “global fashion trends,” “local styles,” “religious values,” and “modestly.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and terms such as “flourishing” show an attempt to use less common language. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, which limits the naturalness of the response. “Creates a negative development” is awkward, while “the way successful countries live” is broad when the point concerns clothing and fashion. “Challenges that school of thought” is also an imprecise expression in this context. Aim for more exact collocations and avoid repeating “global fashion” and “successful countries” when a precise alternative is available. These improvements would make your argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures (“if they can imitate… they would be able to thrive”) and subordinate clauses (“which require different solutions”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument remains easy to follow. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “A Muslim country like Pakistan, cannot dress” has an unnecessary comma and an awkward subject-verb relationship; a country does not dress, its people do. In “their economy is flourishing and living a better lifestyle,” the parallel structure is faulty, and “The influence … is a negative development on the society” uses an incorrect article and preposition pattern. Review agreement, parallel constructions, and comma use, while continuing to practise varied sentence structures.
