Student answer (Band 5.5)

Global Fashion has a great impact on how people dress today. Many people are following the new trends in their clothing. I think this is a negative development because of following reasons.

One of the main reasons is that today we are living in a global village, where everyone has an access to internet and social media specifically. Fashion desingers use the TV commerical for their product marketing, they often hire social media influencers which have followers on internet to create a good influence and people follow their trends blindly. People are posting their daily photos on socail media and they want trendy clothes to look fashionable. Most of the people are not financial stable to afford them as the trendy clothes are too expensive which creates sense of inferiority.

The other reason is that people forget about their traditions. Following a fashion trends often leads to distant to our culture and tradition. In addition, it sometime spread vulgarity, which often contrast to our religion.

For example, In our religion Islam, Men knees should be covered, in contrast the new fashion introduced the shorts pants which barely covers the thighs. Similarly for women there is also such fashionable clothes which are prohibited in our religion.

In conclusion, people following trends effecting their mind peace and also they are getting distant from religion and from their traditions and creates sense of inferiority, which is a negative development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear negative position and offer relevant reasons: social media promotes trends, expensive clothing can create feelings of inferiority, and fashion may conflict with cultural or religious practices. The examples about clothing expectations in Islam help make the latter point concrete. However, the task asks both how global fashion became influential and whether this is positive or negative; the first part is addressed mainly through internet access, advertising and influencers, but these points are brief and some claims are broad. The response is also 14 words below the required minimum, limiting the space available to explain and support your ideas. Develop the causes and consequences with a specific example and fuller explanation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two reason-based paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from social media influence to cultural effects is easy to follow, and signposts such as “One of the main reasons,” “The other reason” and “In conclusion” help readers identify the stages of your argument. However, these linking phrases are somewhat mechanical, and the second body paragraph moves quickly from traditions to vulgarity and religious rules without fully connecting or developing each point. Some references are also unclear, such as “which often contrast to our religion,” where the reader must infer what “which” refers to. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and organise each paragraph around one developed main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “global village,” “social media influencers,” “trendy clothes,” “traditions” and “inferiority,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “fashionable clothes” and “religion.” However, the range is limited and some word choices or combinations are inaccurate, including “create a good influence,” “financial stable,” “distant to our culture” and “mind peace.” Spelling errors such as “desingers,” “commerical” and “socail” are noticeable and reduce the overall control of vocabulary. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe influencers as “promoting trends” and say that people may “feel financially pressured.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You communicate your position using both simple sentences and some attempts at longer structures, for example, “Many people are following the new trends in their clothing” and the sentence beginning “Fashion designers use the TV commercial…”. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty. Examples include “everyone has an access to internet,” “people are not financial stable,” “Following a fashion trends often leads to distant,” and “people following trends effecting their mind peace.” These show problems with articles, agreement, verb forms and sentence construction. The example about men’s knees also needs clearer grammatical phrasing. Practise building accurate sentences with subordinate clauses, and proofread for complete verbs, singular/plural agreement and article use so that your meaning is consistently clear.
