Student answer (Band 6.5)

Individual's choices about how they dress are being influenced by the fashion trends throughout the globe. Social media is one of the prominent reasons as to why more people are being influenced. In my opinion, this seems to be a negative development due to unrealistic beauty standards being set for younger audience.

Fashion is influencing everyday lives of people because of their media consumption. Millions of people are watching models, actors and many influencial bodies on various social media apps daily. Individuals follow these celebrities which introduce them to everchanging fashion trends. Bella Hadid, a model and wife of a famous singer, is known as a trend setter in the beauty industry. When she introduced the rhode phone case on her instagram post, it sold out within minutes. This influence depicts how social media has changed fashion choices of individuals.

Beauty standards set due to this influence shows that is a negative development as the youth is being misguided by thinking that humans are supposed to look perfect. However, in reality, the use of filters, cosmetic surgeries and weight loss operations has now been more practiced than ever, which blurs the line between the ideal world and reality. A real being can not compete with these procedures. The Victoria Secret fashion show held last week, for instance, has caused a lot of youngsters to compare their bodies with models and in turn made them insecure. This unachievable standard lowers the morale of many young individuals.

To sum it up, I believe that use of social media has caused people to be influenced by trends related to various fashion industries. I agree with the sentiment that this is a negative development because it is causing insecurities related to physical appearance in the youth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response addresses both parts of the question: it explains social media’s role in spreading global fashion and clearly argues that this influence is negative because it can create insecurity among young people. The examples of the Rhode phone case and the Victoria’s Secret show make the discussion relevant and help illustrate your position. However, the explanation of how fashion becomes a global influence is narrower than it could be: social media is the main mechanism discussed, with little attention to other factors such as international brands, online shopping, or celebrity marketing. Some claims, particularly that the show made “a lot of youngsters” insecure, would also benefit from clearer support or qualification. More balanced development of these points would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs develop the influence of social media and its effects, and the conclusion restates your position. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “However,” “for instance,” and “To sum it up” help guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate and the central argument remains easy to follow. To make the progression more flexible and precise, strengthen the links between the examples and the broader claims they are meant to support. For example, explain more explicitly how one celebrity product selling out demonstrates the global reach of fashion trends. Some transitions and references are broad, so clearer connections between cause, example, and consequence would improve cohesion further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “beauty standards,” “cosmetic surgeries,” “fashion trends,” and “physical appearance,” and these choices make your main points clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “trend setter” and “unachievable standard.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “influencial bodies,” “everchanging fashion trends,” and “a real being.” Spelling and form errors such as “instagram” and “trend setter” also reduce precision. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check compound words and proper names. A wider range of precise terms for global marketing and consumer influence would help you explain the first part of the task more fully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because it is causing insecurities” and “which blurs the line between the ideal world and reality.” Most sentences communicate your meaning clearly, and the paragraph structure supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “Beauty standards set due to this influence shows,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the opening phrase needs a clearer grammatical structure. “The use of filters … has now been more practiced” is an awkward passive construction, while “a real being can not compete” would be more naturally expressed with a different sentence structure. Review agreement, articles, and passive forms, and proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy while retaining your complex structures.
