IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The influence of gobal fashion is a growing concern. This is largely due to the fact that peaople today use more social media than before.People love to follow trends and they think that it's an important aspect of their life.I strongly disagree with that because it has a lot of negative impacts.

People are influencing by global fashion trends because they admire those trends. They felt incopmlete if there dressing is not according to the trend that's up-to-date which is such a negative thing.Altough it's not a problem for some people. But there are a few people who are effected a great deal with those trends.

There some people who think its a positive development. Those are mainly upper class who can afford expensive dressing. For them it's not really a problem if that trend changes every few days. However those who are middle class or someone who is not even middle class they find it really difficult to keep up with those trends. And that's the main reason I strongly oppose that development.I think it just depends on your thinking whether you feel yourself complete or not without following those changing globel trends. As for today that thing is quite accelerated, mainly because people wanna do what some ifluencer on social media is doing. They simply don't understand the fact that those influencers are getting paid by those designer companies. They make their living doing that thing. For instance a an actor is wearing some brand like Gucci,Prada,LV,Balenciaga or DG those brands paid them for wearing that on-screen.

To conclude,I would like to state that for some people it's a positive devopment cause they admire following those trends and they're finnacially enable to do that. But I stick with my opinion due to the facts that I stated before. And for that reason I think people should be aware of it's negative impacts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you identify social media and influencers as reasons global fashion spreads, and you clearly argue that its effects are mainly negative. The point about people feeling incomplete when they cannot follow current styles is relevant, as is the contrast between wealthier people and those who struggle to afford changing trends. However, these ideas are not developed evenly. The explanation of how social media creates influence is clearer than the discussion of its wider effects, and the example of celebrities wearing designer labels is asserted rather than fully connected to how this affects ordinary people. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation or a specific example to make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure, with an introduction, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion, and the reader can follow your general position. You also use linking expressions such as “However,” “For instance” and “To conclude.” At times, though, the progression within paragraphs is difficult to follow: the third paragraph moves from affordability to personal confidence, then to influencers and celebrity endorsements without clearly showing how each point connects. Some transitions, including “There some people who think its a positive development,” are also unclear. Give each body paragraph one central purpose, order its supporting points logically, and use pronouns and linking phrases to make relationships between ideas explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “global fashion trends,” “social media,” “influencer,” and “designer companies,” so your meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, spelling and word-form errors make the writing less precise, such as “gobal,” “incopmlete,” “effected,” and “financially enable.” Some expressions are also awkward or repetitive, including “that thing” and “changing globel trends.” Aim to use more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling and collocations carefully. For example, describe people as feeling pressure to “keep up with trends” and explain that influencers “promote brands” rather than saying they “make their living doing that thing.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional idea in “if that trend changes every few days” and a relative clause in “who can afford expensive dressing.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence structure, verb forms, articles and punctuation sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “People are influencing by global fashion trends,” “They felt incomplete if there dressing is not according,” and “There some people who think.” Several sentences also run together, particularly the long sentence beginning “As for today,” which contains multiple ideas without clear grammatical boundaries. Practise forming complete clauses and maintaining consistent tense, and divide long sentences into shorter, accurately punctuated units.
