IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, the way people dress has significantly changed, and the way people choose their outfits will probably shift in the future as well. Fashion is known for its irregularity and repetitive patterns. Even minor changes in global fashion can affect the way particular individuals choose their clothes for their daily routine. From my perspective, this phenomenon should be seen as mostly negative.

Small and medium fashion businesses follow rules set by global fashion brands and well-known designers. This dependence on global trends does not allow smaller, passionate designers to express their own ideas in case of insufficient sales. In addition, it causes a limited range of clothing choices for customers. For example, in the majority of successful fashion shops, clothing catalogues are undoubtedly similar.

On the other hand, a limited range of choices has some benefits usually associated with convenience. Customers spend less time on questions about how to combine particular pieces because global fashion trends do it for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You state a clear view that global fashion is “mostly negative” and give a relevant concern: smaller designers may struggle to express their ideas, while customers encounter similar catalogues. You also acknowledge a benefit, explaining that trends can make outfit choices more convenient. However, the task asks both how global fashion became so influential and whether this is positive or negative. The response gives little explanation of the causes of its influence, and the positive/negative discussion is brief and only lightly supported. The required minimum length is not met, which leaves the argument and examples substantially underdeveloped. To improve, explain mechanisms such as social media, celebrity influence, and international retail, then develop each judgement with a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction presents your position, the next paragraph develops a disadvantage, and the final paragraph introduces a counterpoint. Linking phrases such as “In addition” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships between ideas. This coherent arrangement supports the reader, but the progression is limited because the explanation of how fashion gained influence is missing, and the final paragraph ends without a concluding judgement. Some connections are also broad: the move from similar catalogues to limited customer choice would benefit from a clearer explanation. Use a fuller sequence of paragraphs—causes, effects, counterargument, and conclusion—and make references between claims and examples more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You show a reasonably varied vocabulary, including “irregularity,” “repetitive patterns,” “insufficient sales,” and “limited range,” and the meaning is generally clear. This range is sufficient to discuss the topic and includes some less common choices. However, a few expressions are imprecise or unnatural in context, such as “rules set by global fashion brands,” “questions about how to combine particular pieces,” and “clothing catalogues are undoubtedly similar.” These choices reduce precision even though they do not prevent understanding. Aim for more natural collocations and topic-specific wording, for example describing brands as “setting trends,” customers as “deciding how to coordinate outfits,” and shops as offering “similar styles and collections.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a range of sentence forms, including complex structures such as “This dependence on global trends does not allow smaller, passionate designers to express their own ideas in case of insufficient sales” and “Customers spend less time … because global fashion trends do it for them.” Most sentences are controlled, and punctuation is generally clear. There are frequent error-free sentences, with no major grammatical problems that obscure your meaning. To strengthen control further, review the construction “in case of insufficient sales,” which does not express the intended condition naturally, and make sure longer sentences state relationships precisely. You could also vary sentence openings and use more complex clauses to explain causes and consequences in greater depth.
