Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, global fashion trends has a huge amount of influence on the way people dress. Moreover, this influence has occured through the extreme usage of social media by our generation. I firmly believe that this has a huge negative impact on people's lives. In this essay I will explain why this has a negative impact with reasoning.

Social media has played a key role in making people believe in a certain way of dressing, teenagers of our generation consume social media in a large portion of their day. In addition to, when an individual watches their favourite artist wearing something it automically shapes his perception regarding that specific clothing idea. For example, west has a huge impact on Pakistani population as they would copy each style that becomes popular in US. A very recent example of it is baggy pants and shirts that got popular and after a year that trend came in Pakistan. That is the reason why social media became such a huge decision making platform for our people.

I personally believe this to be a negative development as the traditional and cultural clothing concept is disappearing with time. People in our country prefer to wear jeans and shirts rather than wearing shalwar kameez on a regular day. As an unspoken rule states that our traditional dress can just be worn on an ocassion. For instance, a class difference has been made in Pakistan where drivers, guards, mechanics can be seen wearing shalwar kameez on a regular basis and the rich community avoid wearing our cultural dress.

In a nutshell, global fashion trends are a huge influence on people while social media plays a key role in making this happen in various parts of the world. I believe this to be a negative trend becuase of the cultural identity getting neglected extremely often.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain social media’s role in spreading fashion and clearly state that you see this as negative because cultural clothing is being neglected. The examples of US trends reaching Pakistan and the changing use of shalwar kameez make the response relevant and give your position a personal context. The explanation of how celebrity clothing shapes perceptions is also pertinent. However, the causes are somewhat narrow: social media is the main mechanism discussed, while other influences such as international brands, advertising, or online shopping are not explored. The cultural-identity argument is clear but would benefit from fuller explanation of why this change harms people or communities. More development of these points would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to the influence of social media, then to the negative cultural effects, and finally to a conclusion. Paragraphs each have a recognisable focus, and examples generally follow the claims they support. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “For example,” and “In a nutshell” help signal relationships between ideas. At times, however, cohesion feels mechanical or the connection between sentences is not fully clear. The opening of the second paragraph joins two independent ideas with a comma, and “In addition to” does not lead naturally into the following clause. The conclusion repeats the main points rather than drawing them together. Use more varied, precise links and clearer sentence boundaries to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss fashion, social influence, and culture, including “perception,” “traditional and cultural clothing,” and “cultural identity.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the examples are specific enough to avoid overly general language. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “decision making platform,” though some combinations are unnatural or imprecise: “extreme usage of social media,” “consume social media in a large portion of their day,” and “a huge negative impact” could be expressed more idiomatically. Spelling errors such as “occured,” “automically,” “ocassion,” and “becuase” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “as,” “where,” and “because,” and the overall meaning remains clear. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “I firmly believe that this has a huge negative impact on people’s lives.” However, there are some errors in agreement, sentence boundaries, and clause construction. For example, “global fashion trends has” should use a plural verb, while “Social media has played a key role …, teenagers …” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. “In addition to” is not followed by a suitable grammatical complement, and “a class difference has been made” is an awkward passive construction. Review subject–verb agreement and punctuation, and build complex sentences with clearly connected clauses to improve accuracy.
