How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many parts of the modern dressing are dictated by the trends that form in the fashion industry across the globe. In my opinion it is a negative development as people will adopt these trends no matter what they cost or how fake they are in real life.
Firstly, social media has connected each and every person of the earth with eachother so that they can interact online. Apps like instagram and facebook allow users to share their lifestyle with other people. In the same way it has connected common people with celebrities that possess a certain lifestyle. These celebrities then post new fashion trends which their praisers blindly follow without investigating that their idol is being paid for shooting the ad for this company. They do not told the truth about this new fashion product as this will reduce the market price of the new accessary.
Another reason that this development is negative is people will follow other individuals to be a part of society. Fear of missing out is a common mental condition in many individuals which urges them to buy each new item of fashion to be a part of society. By doing so, they donot consider their financial condition. For example, our colleague from university is a big fan of taylor swift and when she launched her new merch which was around [redacted phone] dollars, our friend rushed in to get it. Even though her fianancial condition is not that strong but she still went for it without considering her budget.
In conclusion, I believe that this is a negative development that people are dressed as the global fashion icons. They will not see the whole perspective of this trend that whether it is real or a paid ad. And also they will spend money to buy things that will help them feel the part of society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you consider global fashion influence negative. You also address both parts of the prompt by explaining social media and celebrity promotion as causes, then discussing pressure to fit in and overspending as harms. The university friend’s purchase of Taylor Swift merchandise gives one relevant, specific example. However, the explanation of how global trends spread could be developed further, and some claims—such as people following trends “no matter what they cost”—are broad. The point about paid advertising is relevant but would be stronger if you explained more clearly how it shapes people’s choices. More balanced development of these ideas would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs with separate reasons, and a conclusion that restates your view. Sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Another reason,” and “For example” help readers follow the argument. This gives the essay a coherent progression. Some connections are less smooth, however. The shift from celebrities’ lifestyles to undisclosed advertising is not fully explained, and the conclusion repeats ideas about paid ads and belonging rather than drawing the argument together. References such as “this development” and “they” are generally understandable, but could be more precise. To strengthen cohesion, link each example explicitly to the claim it supports and vary the ways you connect and refer back to ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “global fashion trends,” “celebrities,” “Fear of missing out,” “financial condition,” and “budget.” These choices make your main points clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or informal: “modern dressing,” “praisers,” “shooting the ad,” and “part of society” do not express the intended ideas naturally. There are also spelling and form errors, including “accessary,” “donot,” and “fianancial.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision. Aim for more natural academic phrases and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe people as “followers” and say an influencer “promotes” a product.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “so that,” “which,” and “even though.” Most of the argument remains understandable, and the example sentence shows an attempt to combine several details. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly in verb forms and sentence construction. For example, “They do not told the truth” should use a base verb after “do not,” while “our colleague … is a big fan … and when she launched” shifts awkwardly between present and past. The opening sentence also has an unclear construction around “trends that form.” Review subject–verb patterns, tense consistency, and punctuation in longer sentences. Greater control of these structures would make the response smoother and more accurate.
