Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is becoming increasingly common among people to adopt global fashion trends. While this development is strongly driven by huge adversiting from global clothing brands and influential figures such as actors and sportsperson, I largely believe it has negative effects on society due to cultural identity and local brand will struggle to make money.

This phenomenen is created by global clothing brands that are investing a singificant amount of money in advertising their clothes, which may attracts mostly young adults to buy fashionable clothes to represents themselves with their peers. A clear examples of this development can be seen in Gen Z who often styles their outfit as per latest trending fashion. Another influencing factor is celebrities. This is because they are the one who drives fashion in the world and many people considers their favourite celebrities as their inspiration, which attracts their fans to copying their clothing style.

However, I firmly believe this is driving negative development. The main reason why it is not a positive is lost of cultural identity. If global attire become common in society, people will tend to forget their traditional dressing sense, resulting in cultural identity lost. Second negative effect is local textiles industry will suffer from huf

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear overall view that global fashion has negative effects, and you identify two relevant concerns: loss of cultural identity and difficulties for local businesses. You also address how the influence spreads, citing brand advertising and celebrities, with Gen Z as an example. However, the response only partially develops the task: the cultural point is explained briefly, while the effect on local textiles businesses is left unfinished (“will suffer from huf”), with no supporting explanation. The response is also below the required minimum length, which limits the opportunity to develop both parts of the question. To strengthen the answer, complete the second negative effect and explain how advertising and celebrity influence translate into everyday choices, using a specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining the influence, and a paragraph presenting negative effects. Linking expressions such as “While,” “Another influencing factor,” and “Second negative effect” help signal the main points. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph stops mid-sentence, leaving the second reason undeveloped and the essay without a conclusion. Some connections are also awkward or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “This is because” and “which” to extend sentences. Organise each main idea into a complete point with explanation or an example, then add a brief concluding sentence that restates your position. This would make the overall progression clearer and cohesion less dependent on formulaic links.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “global fashion trends,” “cultural identity,” “traditional dressing sense,” and “local textiles industry.” These choices show an ability to discuss the subject, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several spelling, word-form, and collocation errors reduce precision: “adversiting,” “phenomenen,” “singificant,” and “lost of cultural identity” are examples. Phrases such as “drives fashion in the world” and “copying their clothing style” are also not expressed naturally. Build accuracy by checking spelling and choosing standard collocations, such as “influences fashion worldwide” and “imitate their style.” More precise vocabulary for economic effects would also help you explain the impact on local businesses.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a concessive opening with “While” and explanations introduced by “which” and “because.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas can usually be followed. However, errors occur across sentence patterns and often make the wording difficult to process. For example, “which may attracts” has incorrect verb agreement, “to represents” uses the wrong verb form, and “many people considers” does not agree with its subject. There are also problems with articles and plurals, as in “a clear examples” and “the one who drives.” Review subject–verb agreement, infinitive forms, and singular/plural consistency, then proofread each sentence to ensure its clauses are complete and correctly connected.
