Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are many differing views on how global fashion has become such a strong influence the way people dress today. In this essay, I will examine the main reason behind this change and further delineate why this is a negative development.

The spread of social media is one of the main reasons global fashion has become such a strong influence on people's lives. This is because on social media there is a significant increase in fashion content creators. They post videos of latest trendy clothes that people can wear in different settings. Moreover, clothing brands pay these content creator to make reels wearing their outfits, which influence users to buy clothes of their favourite influencer.

Many individuals spend substantial amount of time and money on their clothes which lead to environmental problems. If people are not wearing clothes in trend, they feel excluded in the society. To avoid this, they keep spending money on upgrading their wardrobe every season just to keep up with the lastest trend. Further more, before going out they end up spending hours watching videos to decide what outfit to wear.

In conclusion, the influence of social media is the primary reason why global fashion has become an important part of people's live. I strongly believe it is negatively impacting individuals because they invest too much of their income and time on their clothes which contributes to environmental pollution.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both parts of the question: social media is identified as a cause, and your position that the development is negative is clear in the introduction and conclusion. The explanation of influencers and brand promotions is relevant, while the environmental impact and pressure to keep up with trends support your view. However, the environmental point is asserted rather than explained in detail, and the effect on people’s time is mentioned without much development. The response is also below the required 250 words: 225 words, with 8 words copied from the prompt excluded from the count. Develop each main idea with a specific example or a fuller explanation to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph explaining the influence of social media, a paragraph describing negative effects, and a conclusion. The progression from cause to consequences is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “To avoid this,” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships between ideas. This coherent structure meets the lower-band expectations and shows some effective organisation. To make the progression more consistently smooth, connect the environmental claim more explicitly to frequent wardrobe replacement, and clarify how the final point about spending hours choosing outfits supports your argument. Some transitions currently introduce ideas without fully developing their connection.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant expressions such as “fashion content creators,” “excluded in the society,” “upgrading their wardrobe,” and “environmental pollution.” These choices make the main points clear, and “substantial amount of time and money” shows an attempt at more precise vocabulary. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “latest trendy clothes,” “clothes of their favourite influencer,” and “keep up with the lastest trend.” There are also spelling errors such as “lastest” and “Further more.” Aim for more natural phrasing and check spelling carefully; this would make your vocabulary more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If people are not wearing clothes in trend, they feel excluded” and a relative clause in “which influence users to buy…”. The meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “influence the way people dress” needs “influence on the way,” “these content creator” requires plural agreement, and “which lead to environmental problems” should agree with the singular subject “amount.” Articles and possessives also need attention in “spend substantial amount” and “their favourite influencer.” Practise checking agreement, articles, and clause structure while retaining your attempts at varied sentences.
