IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

These days people are keen of global fashion and try to follow it.However, I completely disagree with this ongoing trend. This essay will explain impact of global fashion on our society as well as why I disagree with this trend.

One of the main reason of this ongoing trend is that people are following social media blindly. They do not figure out which kind of clothes are suitable for them. Moreover, they have no knowledge of selecting an outfit according to the event. They follow their favourite media personalities without thinking wisely. They dont dress up according to their personality. It is also seen that people follow wrong trend on specific events. For example, some girls wear red lipstick in consoling ceremonies.

Another reason is that global fashion has bad impact on kids of school going age. Those kids follow what they see on television and social media and if they are not supervised by parents, they can follow wrong trends. For example,a five year old girl is wearing a long dress upto her toes and can fell by wearing such dress.

In conclusion,I believe that our public should understand that every fashion is not designed for everyone. In addition, they should have sense to dintinguish between right and wrong trends. There should be a limitation of following global fashion and it should be followed only when it is appopriate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear negative view in the introduction and conclusion, and you offer relevant concerns about social-media influence and children copying unsuitable clothing. However, the task asks both how global fashion became influential and whether this is positive or negative. The response mainly explains why people follow trends, rather than how global fashion gained influence, and it does not develop the positive-versus-negative evaluation beyond stating disagreement. The examples, such as red lipstick at a condolence ceremony and a child wearing a long dress, are brief and not fully explained. The response is also below the required 250 words, which limits the opportunity to address and support the task’s ideas fully. Develop the causes of fashion’s reach and explain the consequences of your position with specific support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting reasons, and a conclusion. The paragraphs generally keep to one main point, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “Another reason,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the basic direction. However, progression is limited because the body paragraphs list related claims without clearly connecting them to the question of how global fashion became influential. Some linking is mechanical, and punctuation spacing is inconsistent, making transitions less smooth. The conclusion repeats the general position rather than drawing together the two arguments. To improve, organise the body around distinct answers to the prompt, use clearer references between ideas, and explain how each example supports the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main concerns, including “global fashion,” “social media,” “outfit,” “personality,” and “trends.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “consoling ceremonies” and “media personalities.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, including “keen of global fashion,” “wrong trend,” and “bad impact.” Spelling errors such as “dintinguish” and “appopriate” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall message, but they make parts of the response less natural and precise. Build a wider set of accurate collocations for discussing influence, clothing choices, and social consequences, and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, for example, “Those kids follow what they see on television and social media and if they are not supervised by parents, they can follow wrong trends.” This shows an effort to connect ideas and use a conditional structure. However, the range remains limited, and frequent errors affect accuracy: “One of the main reason” has a singular/plural agreement problem, while “people are keen of” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. Articles and sentence boundaries are also inconsistent, as in “a five year old girl is wearing a long dress upto her toes and can fell.” Missing spaces after full stops and commas further weaken punctuation control. Practise accurate agreement, articles, and clause punctuation, then check each sentence for a complete and correctly formed structure.
