Student answer (Band 6.0)

Fashion trends across the globe has influenced people and their dressing sense significantly over the past few years. This is mainly because of the gradual use of social media and the availability of mobile phones and internet to the new generation. I believe that it is a negative development because people are following the social celebrities and the new fashion styles with the blind eyes without thinking twice.

During the 2020 pandemic, people especially students over the age of 10 started created accounts on TikTok, Facebook and Instagram to gain fame and get rid of boredom. This trend continued after the 2020 lockdown and has now started affecting people's way of thinking and dressing. As fashion trends change each day, people tends to follow up with the new ideas and trends to fill the space. Moreover, being a social media celebrity with a lot of followers, a few people feel the pressure to always perform and seek the external validation to keep up with their followers.

In addition, the constant access to the internet and mobile phones played another important role in creating new trends and following them in real lives. Children under the age of 18 do not know what's right or wrong and lack decision making skills so they end up either following someone with new perspectives on social platforms or become someone who creates new trends. Spending a lot of time on internet affect their concentration ability and decision making skills as fashion trends come and go very quickly.

I believe that this is negative addition to a society as dressing up is not just the way we present ourselves. It represents how we think, how we hold our values, and what are our cultural beliefs. Most of the new fashion trends does not make any sense to the majority of the population but people want to re-create them because it gives them constant validation from their surroundings which is quite dangerous for their self esteem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both parts of the question: you explain the influence of social media, mobile phones and internet access, and clearly state that you consider the development negative. The pandemic example and discussion of pressure for external validation make the explanation relevant. However, some points are more fully developed than others. For instance, the claim that children lack decision-making skills is broad and would be stronger with a specific example or clearer explanation of how this leads to copying fashion. The final paragraph explains your concern about values and self-esteem, but the link between clothing trends and these effects could be made more explicit. More balanced development of the causes and consequences would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction presents the causes and your position, two body paragraphs discuss the influence of online platforms, and the conclusion restates your negative view. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “In addition” help signal development. At times, however, connections between claims are not fully clear. For example, the move from children following trends to reduced concentration and decision-making needs a more explicit explanation. Some references to “this trend” and “them” could also be made more precise. To improve progression, organise each body paragraph around one main point and show clearly how each example supports it, rather than adding several related effects in sequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “external validation,” “cultural beliefs,” “fashion trends” and “self esteem.” These expressions help communicate your concerns about social media and identity. There are also some imprecise or unnatural choices, such as “following ... with the blind eyes,” “fill the space,” and “negative addition to a society.” “Social celebrities” is also less natural than a more established term for online personalities. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to use familiar collocations accurately, and choose wording that expresses the intended relationship clearly—for example, whether people are keeping up with trends or seeking approval from others.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “as” and “so,” and most of your meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with subject–verb agreement and verb forms. For example, “Fashion trends ... has influenced” should use a plural verb, while “people tends” and “Most of the new fashion trends does” also require agreement. “Started created accounts” needs a different verb form, and “Spending ... affect” should take a singular verb. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction, such as “a negative addition to a society.” Review agreement with plural subjects and the forms that follow verbs such as “start,” then proofread each sentence for these patterns.
