Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people view that the emergence of global fashion trends has changed the way people dress nowadays. I believe that this is a negative develoment because it leads to excessive payment and recent fashion trends are created for the wrong purpose.

The main factor that makes global fashion become such a strong influence on individual's life is the internet. Online platforms play an indispensible role in most people's live as they use it everyday. Many brands use the internet to promote and sell a variety of clothings to customers. The internet contributes to these negative developments.

Firstly, it makes people buy unnecessary items. Luxurious brands often uses an popular influencer to promote their clothes. By doing this, people, particularly teenagers, are attracted to buy more clothes. They use fashion trends as a sign of showing their social status or geting into friend groups without knowing the purpose of purchasing these items. Consequently, it leads to an excessive payment, which may affect their income.

Secondly, sometimes global fashion trends are not made for the intended purpose. Clothes are intentionally made for wearing. However, global fashion has appeared to become a sign of social status. For example, Balengiaca, a luxurious brand, released a handbag that looks like a trash bag. This accesory is sold for an extremely high amount of money with many people buying it, showing that this trend turns out to be a wealth indicatior.

In conclusion, I think that global fashion trends produce many drawbacks such as the unnecessary expenses and the wrong purpose of clothings. These negative developments are mainly caused by the internet.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses both parts of the question: you identify the internet as a major driver of global fashion and clearly judge its effects to be negative. The examples of influencer marketing and the Balenciaga handbag are relevant and help illustrate your concerns about spending and status. However, the explanation of how fashion spreads could be developed further—for instance, by showing how social media exposure, celebrity promotion, and rapid online purchasing reinforce one another. The second drawback is also less fully explained: the handbag example suggests fashion can signal wealth, but the claim that trends are created for the “wrong purpose” needs clearer reasoning and support. The conclusion restates your position but does not add much synthesis.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, a paragraph explaining the influence of the internet, two paragraphs developing negative effects, and a conclusion. The sequence is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” make the stages explicit. This gives the response a coherent progression. To make the links feel more natural and flexible, reduce reliance on formulaic transitions and connect each example more directly to the point it supports. For example, the sentence “The internet contributes to these negative developments” is vague and repeats the preceding idea rather than guiding the reader to the next paragraph. Clarify references such as “this trend” by naming the specific behaviour or fashion practice.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “global fashion trends,” “promote,” “social status,” and “intentionally,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “wealth indicator” and “luxurious brand.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “excessive payment” is not the natural phrase for the idea, and “a sign of showing their social status” is unnecessarily cumbersome. Spelling errors such as “develoment,” “indispensible,” “accesory,” and “indicatior” also reduce accuracy. Aim to use more natural topic collocations and check spelling carefully, especially for key terms that carry your argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a handbag that looks like a trash bag” and a subordinate clause beginning “without knowing the purpose.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with agreement, articles, and plural forms. For example, “Luxurious brands often uses an popular influencer” should use a plural verb and a correctly formed article, while “people’s live” needs a plural noun. In “they use it everyday,” the pronoun reference is unclear because “platforms” is plural. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and pronoun reference, and vary sentence patterns while maintaining accuracy.
