IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.

How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In the contemporary era, the trend of wearing fashionable clothes has gained immense popularity in people's lives. Global fashion trends has greater impact on many aspects of the way people dress up today. I believe that it is a negative development as it effecting people's financial condition. This essay will delve deep into the notion in its forthcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, in the modern world the attitude of individuals towards fashion has changed from the past because of influence by global fashion. The predominent one is, social media plays a pivotal role in spreading information regarding launch of new trendy clothes. Apps such as Instagram and Facebook shows reels of people wearing distinct dresses which especially influence youngsters. Furthermore, some people follow certain global celebrities and believe as they are ideals for them. As a result, people choose the same attire and buy branded items which are used by their ideals. Beside this, many people wants to make themselves popular by wearing classy clothes and adapting western culture just to post reels on social media platforms.

On the other hand, greater influence of global fashion has huge negative impact on the society. The first and formost is, people of new generation adapting western culture by copying their dressing sense and lifestyle. As a result their are forgetting their own culture and traditions. What is more, the influence of global fashion trends affecting the financial condition of person as this clothes are very costly to buy. Youngsters usually buy this clothes without considering their financial conditions.

To recapitulate, there are ways by which people gets infulenced by global fashion trends such as social media, global celebrities followers and popularity in world. On the flip side this trend giving negative impression on the individuals own culture and affecting their financial condition.

Linking phrases such as “Furthermore,” “As a result,” and “To recapitulate” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “On the other hand” suggests a contrast, although the second body paragraph continues the negative position rather than presenting an opposing view. The conclusion also repeats the main points without bringing them together. Use transitions that show the actual relationship between ideas, and make the progression within each paragraph more explicit—for example, connect celebrity influence directly to the pressure to purchase branded clothing.

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “global fashion trends,” “branded items,” “celebrities,” and “culture and traditions,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “plays a pivotal role.” However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems make the expression less natural, including “predominent,” “ideals” for role models, “Beside this,” and “negative impression” where a negative effect is meant. Repetition of “influence,” “people,” and “fashion” also limits flexibility. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and vary repeated terms; proofreading spelling and word forms would make your vocabulary more effective.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures such as “As a result” and a subordinate clause beginning “because of.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “Global fashion trends has” should use a plural verb, and “Apps … shows” has the same agreement problem. In “people gets influenced,” the subject and verb do not agree, while “this clothes” needs a plural determiner. Some sentences also have awkward or incomplete grammatical patterns, such as “I believe that it is a negative development as it effecting…” Review agreement and verb forms, and check each sentence for a complete, correctly linked clause.
