IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Many aspects of the way people dress today are influenced by global fashion trends.
How has global fashion become such a strong influence on people's lives? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, global fashion trends had a major impact on how people choose their clothes. While this has some drawback, I believe that it is largely a positive development.
One of the main reasons why global fashion has become so influential is social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Influencers often make trends go viral or promote different brands. After seeing these influencers, many people change their fashion choices. For example, Pakistani fashion has shifted towards Western styles because people watch reels on Instagram and follow influencers. Another factor is online shopping. Many brands are available online, offering different types of styles. Nowadays, a large number of people use their mobile phones for shopping, and these brands attract customers by introducing new styles and trends. They also hire influencers and celebrities for advertisements. As a result, people are tempted to buy those clothes because of attractive advertisements.
This has been a positive development because people can choose from a wide range of options and brands, and sometimes they can buy cheaper clothes due to competition among brands. It also has a great economic impact on the market because more entrepreneurs can launch their own brands, creating more jobs in the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both parts of the question: social media and online shopping are given as reasons for fashion’s influence, and you clearly state that you see the development as largely positive. The examples of influencers promoting brands and Pakistani fashion adopting Western styles are relevant. However, the explanation of the positive effects is brief: cheaper clothing and job creation are mentioned but not developed with specific consequences or examples. The response also falls short of the required minimum length, which limits how fully you can explain and support your ideas. To strengthen the response, expand each main point with a clear explanation or example, and consider acknowledging a specific drawback before weighing it against the benefits.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining the causes, and a paragraph giving your view. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking phrases such as “For example,” “Another factor,” and “As a result” help show relationships. However, the second paragraph contains several points in quick succession, while the final paragraph moves from consumer choice to economic effects without much explanation of the connection. Some linking is also repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “people” and “brands.” Develop clearer topic sentences and use referencing or transitions to connect each explanation to the main argument, rather than relying mainly on a sequence of additions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “influential,” “promote,” “competition,” “entrepreneurs,” and “economic impact.” These choices communicate your ideas clearly, and the fashion and social-media vocabulary is relevant. There are also some broad or repetitive expressions, such as “different types of styles,” “new styles and trends,” and “attractive advertisements,” which make parts of the response less precise. “Fashion has shifted towards Western styles” is understandable, though a more exact description of the change would strengthen the example. Aim to vary repeated words and choose more specific terms for the effects of advertising and competition. This would add precision while keeping your meaning clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the opening contrast clause, “While this has some drawback,” and the cause-and-effect sentence beginning “As a result.” Most sentences are understandable, and grammatical errors do not prevent the reader from following your argument. Some errors remain: “global fashion trends had a major impact” would be more consistent as “have had,” and “some drawback” needs a plural form or an article. There is also a missing space after the full stop in “clothes.While.” To improve, check tense consistency, singular and plural forms, and punctuation, while continuing to use subordinate clauses to show relationships between ideas.
