Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, worldwide fashion trends largely influence the way people dress and it is probably because through internet they know what is trending and in certain ways it is a positive development.

Today's world is much more connected through internet as it has become a global village and trends in one part of the world instantly influence every other region. Fashion has always been an important part of human lives and everyone wants to follow whatever is trending. In my opinion, fashion trends have always influenced people's lives to a great extent and they have become much more influential recently as everyone is using social media and knows what is trending.

It can be argued that it is a negative development as many people cannot afford to follow every trend and may feel left out. People from the underdeveloped countries are hardly able to afford basic necessities of life but they have smartphones and internet connection through which they get to know about new trends. Simply not being able to afford them and looking at their own condition may induce a sense of inferiority in them.

However, I believe that it is a positive development because when something is in fashion it becomes easily available and cheaper eventually. Thus, more people can buy certain trending things and it can make them feel more inclusive.

In conclusion, internet has brought world closer and now trends are not local but they are global. It has both positive and negative affects but personally I believe that it is a positive development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the prompt: you explain the influence of internet and social media, and give a clear overall view that global fashion is positive, while acknowledging a disadvantage. The point that people who cannot afford trends may feel inferior is relevant, and the counterpoint that popular items can become cheaper offers a reason for your position. However, the explanation of how trends spread is repeated in the introduction, body and conclusion, while the affordability argument is asserted rather than supported with a specific example or fuller explanation. Develop the causes more distinctly—for example, explain how influencers, online advertising or international brands expose people to trends—and extend the positive argument beyond availability and price.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph explaining a disadvantage, a contrasting paragraph supporting your view, and a conclusion. The contrast is signalled clearly by “It can be argued” and “However,” and the conclusion restates your position. This meets the lower-band expectation of an organised response and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. At times, though, progression is repetitive: the internet making the world connected and trends becoming global appear in several paragraphs without adding much new information. The opening sentence also combines the cause and your evaluation before these are developed. Give each paragraph a distinct purpose and use references such as “this exposure” to connect ideas without repeating the same claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range to discuss the topic, including “global village,” “trending,” “afford,” “sense of inferiority” and “inclusive.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the attempt to use phrases such as “basic necessities of life” adds some specificity. However, several expressions are broad or repetitive, especially “trends,” “fashion” and “positive development,” which limits precision. There are also some word-choice or collocation issues: “through internet” needs a more natural expression, and “positive affects” uses the wrong word form for the intended meaning. Aim for more precise terms for the mechanisms and effects of fashion, and check common collocations and spelling so that your vocabulary sounds more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “when something is in fashion it becomes easily available” and a subordinate clause beginning “as many people cannot afford to follow every trend.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors do not prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. For example, “through internet” is missing an article, while “Fashion has always been an important part of human lives” has an awkward plural construction. The opening sentence also joins several ideas with “and” in a way that makes the structure less controlled. Practise accurate article use and sentence boundaries, and vary complex structures while checking each clause for clear grammatical relationships.
