Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, international fashion trends influence the way people attire themselves. Some argue that, it is a positive approach which displays global connectedness and creates a sense of belonging among individuals. Others believe that, it is negative because it promotes cultural homogeneity and dominate cultures might overshadow others. I firmly believe that, it is a negative development as it can create cultural assimilation too.

One of the best advantages is that individuals feel to be a part of a wider community. People even connect with each other because of the same fashion sense as they feel likeminded. Also, individuals go to several events or shows where people attire themselves following a same trend. For instance, Kpop is a South Korean boy band, but people from other regions like India replicate the way they present themselves. Individuals feel more connected that way, they may feel a bond just being dressed up like each other.

On the other hand, these trends tend to offer cultural homogeneity. It not only affects the fashion sense but also affects the traditional norms and values. Every culture have their traditional attires, people are now attracted towards the global fashion that deterioate the local fashion as well as economy. Also, people tend to follow the cultures of developed countries more and it help them to passively dominate the other cultures. I think it creates cultural assimilation too as a result. It is not just about fashion sometimes, it is an wider social problem too as it creates negative impact on local societies.

In conclusion, although people feel a sense of belongingness that knows no border, it passively pushing towards homogeneity and cultural domination is also an outcome of this. It affects the local culture and knowingly or unknowingly, people involve themselves in the assimilation process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both questions: the first body paragraph explains how shared trends can create connection and belonging, while the second discusses cultural homogeneity and the risk of dominant cultures overshadowing local ones. Your negative position is clear in the introduction and conclusion. The K-pop example gives the first point some support, but the explanation of how global fashion became influential is less fully developed; the response mainly describes its effects rather than explaining the mechanisms behind its reach. The claims that trends weaken local economies and lead to assimilation are relevant, but remain broad and would benefit from a specific example and clearer explanation. Developing these less-supported points would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the positive and negative effects, and a conclusion that restates your view. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and the ideas generally progress logically within each paragraph. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in connecting points. However, several links are repetitive or awkward, particularly repeated uses of “Also” and “I think it creates cultural assimilation too as a result.” Some references, such as “that way” and “this,” could identify their meaning more precisely. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between each claim and its explanation clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “global fashion,” “cultural homogeneity,” “traditional norms and values,” and “cultural assimilation.” These choices show an effort to discuss the issue beyond basic terms, and the meaning is generally clear. There is also some variety in how you describe effects, such as “overshadow” and “dominate.” At times, however, less familiar wording is inaccurate or unnatural: “people attire themselves,” “a same trend,” and “a wider social problem” do not sound idiomatic in context. Spelling errors such as “deterioate” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise collocations and check spelling; this will help your vocabulary sound more controlled and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “although,” and “as,” and your meaning is usually understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “I firmly believe that, it is a negative development,” though the comma after “that” is unnecessary. Other errors show that sentence structure and agreement are not yet consistent: “Every culture have” should use a singular verb, and “it help them” also needs subject–verb agreement. In “Individuals feel more connected that way, they may feel a bond,” two independent clauses are joined with only a comma. Review agreement, articles, and punctuation, and practise combining ideas accurately. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen this criterion.
