Student answer (Band 5.5)

Many people dress today dress in a way that is influenced by different global fashion trends.

Global fashion trends start to influence people lives by a large factor espacially after the rise of social media. People who follow different brands get influened either by their advertisement or influencers who gets paid to promote those brands and they might even not use those brands items in real life as well. When I was young, Q mobile used to hire famous actresses of that time to advertise their mobile phones even though through social media we could see that those actresses did not even use the phones they are promoting. Many trends are made trends for the sake of profiting. Iphone has done a great job making it trend that whoever buys Iphone looks cool using it. People in Pakistan often buys JV Iphone which is a locked phone and you can not even call from it just so they can look cool and follow the trend.

In my opinion it has numerious negative effect too which out weighs the advantages by a large factor. For example by following trends people are are losing their cultural values or the cultural fashion seems 'booring' to them espacially the younger generation. There is also a force adoption of trends going on, For example during my bachelors degree, the professor who was teaching us finance and accounting forced us to wear western clothes which were dress pents and shirts which is clearly a western influenced trend.

So in conclusion, the negative developments are more profound than positive ones when people dress are influened by global fashion trends.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you explain the influence of advertising and social media, and you clearly argue that the effects are mainly negative. The examples of paid influencers and people buying locked iPhones to appear fashionable are relevant and help illustrate how trends shape behaviour. Your point about cultural fashion becoming less appealing to younger people also responds directly to the question. However, the explanation of how global fashion spreads is more developed than the discussion of its effects, and the example of a professor requiring Western clothes is not fully connected to the wider impact on people’s lives. Develop each main idea with clearer explanation and support, and acknowledge a specific positive effect before weighing it against the disadvantages.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining the influence of trends, a paragraph presenting disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking expressions such as “For example” and “So in conclusion” help readers follow the main points. However, the progression within paragraphs is sometimes uneven: the discussion moves from social-media promotion to mobile-phone advertising and then to iPhones without clearly showing how each example builds the argument. Some connections are also mechanical, and the conclusion largely repeats the position rather than drawing the ideas together. Use topic sentences to signal each paragraph’s central point and add clearer links between examples and the claims they support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your ideas, including “global fashion trends,” “advertisement,” “cultural values,” and “influenced.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “paid to promote” and “cultural fashion.” However, several word-choice, spelling, and collocation problems reduce precision: “numerious negative effect,” “booring,” “force adoption,” and “dress pents” make parts of the response less polished. Repetition of “trend” and “cool” also limits variety. Aim to use more accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, explain that people “follow trends to appear fashionable” rather than repeatedly saying they want to look “cool.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “influencers who gets paid” and a conditional-style explanation of what buyers do “just so they can look cool.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences harder to process. Examples include “people lives,” “People in Pakistan often buys,” and “the negative developments are more profound … when people dress are influenced,” which show problems with possessives, subject–verb agreement, and sentence construction. There are also awkwardly joined clauses, particularly in the long sentence about the professor. Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and divide long sentences when the relationship between clauses is unclear.
