IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear James,

Hope you are doing well. I am very exited as you are coming to stay with me. Unfortunately, I would be at work when you are arriving. As your train will arrive this morning and I will be done at 5 pm.

I am providing you the passcode to enter into the house. The pin is 1234. By entering the code the door will open automatically. And it locks by it self when you enter inside. I have already place towel and other accessories for you on the bedroom.

When you arrive at Hamilton Go train station come towards bus stand which is across the station. Moreover, take bus number 35c from there and stop at limbridge stop. My house is beside that stop. The home is in brown and red color on master street.

I will be home at 5:30 pm from then onwards we will have a coffee together and then I have booked tickets for movie night. After the cinema we would eat dinner at my favourite restaurant named Taj Palace.

I am happy to meet you after long time

Yours sincerly,

AP

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three requested points clearly. The passcode and automatic-lock instructions explain how James can enter, the bus route and landmarks guide him from the station, and you give your return time and a specific evening plan. Details such as the bus number, stop, house colours, cinema tickets and restaurant make the letter useful and personal. The arrangements are generally clear, although the entry instructions could be more precise about where or how to enter the code, and the route would benefit from checking that the stop and street names are unambiguous. Overall, the task is fully covered with relevant supporting detail; clearer practical directions and slightly more precise phrasing would strengthen it further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear sequence: greeting and explanation of your absence, entry arrangements, directions, and evening plans. Separate paragraphs help the reader locate each piece of information, and the progression is easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “and then” to connect steps. At times, however, the links feel mechanical or the sentence boundaries interrupt the flow: “As your train will arrive this morning and I will be done at 5 pm” is left as a fragment, while “And it locks…” begins a sentence with a connector that is not needed. Aim for smoother connections between related instructions and use referencing consistently, so the route and entry steps read as one natural set of directions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough everyday vocabulary to communicate the arrangements, including “passcode,” “automatically,” “bus stand,” “across the station,” and “booked tickets.” The language is appropriate for a friendly personal letter, and the concrete details make the message understandable. However, the range is fairly limited, and several word-choice, collocation and spelling errors reduce accuracy: “very exited” should be “very excited,” “bedroom” needs a more natural phrase such as “in the bedroom,” and “movie night” is less precise here than “a film.” “Accessories” is also not the right word for items such as towels. Build a wider set of natural expressions for giving directions and describing household arrangements, and proofread spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

Your message communicates its main meaning, and you attempt some longer structures, for example “When you arrive at Hamilton Go train station…” and “After the cinema we would eat dinner…”. However, the range is limited and errors occur often enough to make some sentences awkward or incomplete. “As your train will arrive this morning and I will be done at 5 pm” is a dependent clause without a main clause; combine it with the preceding sentence. There are also errors in verb forms and agreement, as in “I have already place” and “it locks by it self when you enter inside.” Practise forming complete sentences and checking tense, verb forms, articles and prepositions. More accurate control of these basic patterns would make the instructions smoother and easier to read.
