Student answer (Band 7.0)
Hi Maria,
I am so excited to see you after a long time. As you will be reaching to my city in morning, but I am working on that day and I am leaving home at 6am. I made all the arrangement for you so not to worry. I will drop my keys to the neigbours who is very friendly and trusted. Do not hesitate to ring his the door once you are here.
One more thing to say that when you are at station you need to take city bus number 413A to reach the community I am in, you need to get off the bus after 4stops. my house number is 34B besides the bus stop.
I leave the office at 5 PM; however, due to heavy city traffic, I usually reach home around 6:30 PM. I have already plan for dinner at home to spend some quality time with you after long time.
I eagerly waiting for the day to meet you.
see you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You explained the key arrangements, provided clear instructions for the bus route, and mentioned your arrival time and plans for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To improve, you could provide slightly more detail in your suggestions for the evening, such as mentioning a specific activity or a type of food you plan to prepare, which would help to further develop your ideas and make the letter feel more natural and engaging.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific part of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'however' and 'one more thing', to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit abrupt. For example, the transition between the bus instructions and the house location could be smoother. Additionally, the paragraphing is slightly inconsistent in its indentation. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring clear paragraph breaks will help improve the overall flow and readability of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'quality time' and 'do not hesitate' are used appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'reaching to my city' (should be 'arriving in my city') and 'the neighbours who is' (should be 'the neighbor who is'). While these errors do not impede communication, they do highlight a need for more precision. Focusing on common collocations and practicing the correct use of prepositions will help you move to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('the neighbours who is') and article usage ('at station' instead of 'at the station'). You also have some tense inconsistencies, such as 'I have already plan' (should be 'I have already planned'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely cause confusion for the reader. To improve, pay closer attention to verb forms and ensure that your sentences are punctuated correctly, especially when using conjunctions.
