IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Amber,

How are things going? I hope everything is going well with you. I'm writing to inform you that I will not be able to pick you up from the train station this morning, because I have an important meeting in the company and I need to be present all day.

Therefore, I have made other arrangements for you!, you can take bus number five from the train station to get you here in the neighborhood.

Moreover, search for house number 27, I have left the keys under the front carpet use them to get inside the house.

Additionally, I will be home around 6.30 p.m., after my shift we could order a take out or a pizza and relaxe, we can keep up and chat all night. We could also make plans for tommorow because it will be my day off. I can take you out in a car trip to explor the city and enjoy their traditions and try the delicious food!, tell me what you think of this plan!.

Best wishes,

Amanda

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided directions from the station, and proposed a plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. To improve, you could provide slightly more detail in the directions, such as mentioning the name of the bus stop or the approximate travel time, which would help to fully develop the response and reach a higher band level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or are used with incorrect punctuation, such as the comma splice in 'Therefore, I have made other arrangements for you!, you can take bus number five'. Improving the variety and accuracy of your linking words will help the flow of your writing feel more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using phrases like 'important meeting' and 'explore the city'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'relaxe' (relax), 'tommorow' (tomorrow), and 'explor' (explore). Additionally, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'in the company' instead of 'at work' or 'at the office', and 'keep up' instead of 'catch up'. Focusing on accurate spelling and more natural collocations will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several punctuation errors, particularly the misuse of exclamation marks and commas, such as in '...get into the house!, you can take...'. There are also minor grammatical slips, such as 'in a car trip' (on a car trip) and 'enjoy their traditions' (enjoy its traditions). To improve, focus on sentence boundaries and ensure that complex sentences are punctuated correctly to avoid run-on sentences or comma splices.
