IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sara,

I am eagerly waiting to see you and your family on coming Friday morning. However, I have to attend an important meeting on that time, I have arranged another plan for you.

I have change the main door's digital lock's password and already texted it to you so that you can get access on your arrival. The password should be four digit number.

I already pre-booked a cab for the pick up. Mostly, the cab would be there at 11:35 a.m, on the left side of the exit gate. Therefore, you along with your daughter and your hubby would have enough time to reach the cab parking space. I already send the details on your email regarding this.

Furthermore, I would be home around 5:00 p.m., and right after my arrival, we will head out to the famous Italian restaurant for the dinner.

Call or text me, if you will have any questions for this arrangements. See you soon.

Love,

Maya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific instructions for the transport from the station, and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and personal style throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor details, such as the specific time of arrival or the nature of the meeting, are integrated more naturally into the flow of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the visit. You have used basic cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. While the progression is clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences is more fluid. For example, the transition between the arrival arrangements and the cab booking could be smoother to avoid a list-like feel. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the readability of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, including terms like 'pre-booked', 'digital lock', and 'access'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'on coming Friday' (should be 'this coming Friday') and 'hubby' (which is informal, though acceptable in this context, 'family' or 'partner' might be more standard). You also used 'on that time' instead of 'at that time'. While these errors do not impede communication, expanding your range of collocations and refining your prepositions would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I have change' (should be 'I have changed') and 'I already send' (should be 'I have already sent'). Additionally, 'if you will have any questions' should be 'if you have any questions'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on consistent verb tense usage, particularly with the present perfect tense, and ensure subject-verb agreement is maintained in more complex sentences.
