IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Oniel,

Hope this letter finds you well, I'm writing to share some imperative arrangements, I have made for your visit at my home such as keys to have access to my home.

Since i heard the news that you are coming to stay with me made my day extremely happy and I can't wait for the time to spend our quality time with each other. As you are reaching Amritsar on 28th July by 11:00 am, at that time i will be at work due to some important deadlines. Unfortunately, I won't be able to pick you up from train station but I will share the transportation information which is quite convenient and easy.

When you reach at station after collecting your luggage just come out of the station from Gate.No.2 and book a ride from Taxi office located right outside the gate 2 with bright yellow gate. It'll take approximate 20 minutes to reach my home. To access my home, the main gate keys i kept right under the carpet with label home key with long black strip on it. I'll be home shortly around 2:00 pm, until that relax yourself in my bedroom and take some deep sleep, so that you'll be ready to spend your evening with me in our favourite Italian restaurant.

I will look forward to see you soon, till that time take care of yourself.

Yours friendly,

Rashim

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific instructions for the taxi and location, and suggested an evening activity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have successfully addressed all requirements of the prompt, ensuring the reader has all the necessary information for their arrival and stay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for specific instructions, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. You use some cohesive devices like 'Since', 'When', and 'until that', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with sentence connectivity, such as the run-on sentence in the first paragraph. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'imperative', 'convenient', and 'deadlines'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'share some imperative arrangements' (which sounds slightly unnatural) and 'take some deep sleep'. Additionally, there are a few minor errors in phrasing, such as 'Yours friendly' (the standard is 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes'). Despite these minor issues, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as comma splices ('Hope this letter finds you well, I'm writing...') and missing articles ('from Gate.No.2', 'from train station'). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are generally maintained, but there are occasional slips like 'I will look forward to see you' (should be 'to seeing you'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
