IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Harsh,

I hope this letter finds you in radiant health. I recently heard that you’re traveling to my town on next Monday for your exam, and will be staying with me for couple of days. I would like to inform you that I won’t be able to pick you up from train station, as I will be out of town due to business meeting.

Firstly, I will be dropping off my keys to my neighbour Mr.Patel, whom I know from the last five years. He will be your first point of contact when you reach here. Secondly, the travel from train station to my house is pretty basic. You will be required to hopp into bus 45, which will take you down south till Albion mall. The mall holds multiple food chains, if you’re hungry than you could eat or have coffee from here. Then, you have to walk for 800 meters in North East direction. My place is down on the second street: 49 Finch Avenue West.

Furthermore, I would like to bring you to an Angara Indian restaurant in the evening after I will be home from work. This place serves one of the best hakka cuisine and have mouthwatering Indian curries. Should you require any more details, I would be happy to assist you.

I look forward to hearing back from you and will see you next week.

Regards,

Ajay.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements with Mr. Patel, provided specific directions from the train station to your home, and proposed a clear plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader has all the necessary information to navigate their arrival and your meeting. The response is fully compliant with the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different topics. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing (e.g., 'He will be your first point of contact') is clear and easy to follow. The structure is coherent and supports the overall message well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a semi-formal/informal letter. Phrases like 'radiant health', 'point of contact', and 'mouthwatering' show an ability to use more descriptive language. There are minor issues with collocation, such as 'hopp into bus' (should be 'hop on') and 'have coffee from here' (should be 'have a coffee there'). However, these errors do not impede communication and the overall lexical range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'travel from train station' (missing 'the'), 'than you could eat' (should be 'then'), and 'after I will be home' (should be 'after I am home'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free and the meaning is always clear. Your control of punctuation and sentence construction is generally strong, allowing for a fluent reading experience.
