IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hey Rohan,

I hope you're doing well and travel safe. I'm looking forward to meet you at this weekends. Unfortunately, I won't be able to see you in the morning because I have work on that day.

Don't worry about how to enter in the house I already made the arrangements. Actually, I gave a spare key to my neighbor, Mrs. Brown. He already know that you're coming and He will assist you.

Most important thing, don't forget to call me when you reach at train station As i book a taxi for you which will take you to my house. However, I need to confirm your timing with diver which I will do when you about to reach at the train station.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While you have addressed the three bullet points—explaining the key arrangements, providing instructions for the taxi, and mentioning your arrival time—the content is incomplete. The letter ends abruptly mid-sentence ('Mrs. Brown will give'), meaning the final bullet point regarding what you will do together that evening is not addressed. To improve, ensure you fully develop each point and check that your letter reaches the required length. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, but the lack of completion prevents a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into short paragraphs, which is a good start. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the incomplete nature of the text. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However' and 'Actually', but they are sometimes used incorrectly or in a way that feels slightly mechanical. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the confusion between 'He' and 'She' when referring to Mrs. Brown. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences more naturally and ensure that your pronouns consistently refer back to the correct nouns.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for a personal letter, but it is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'reach at train station' (should be 'reach the train station') and 'book a taxi' (should be 'have booked' or 'will book'). You rely on basic phrasing to convey your message. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to travel and arrangements, and pay closer attention to common collocations to ensure your writing sounds more natural and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'looking forward to meet you' (should be 'meeting'), 'enter in the house' (should be 'enter the house'), and 'He already know' (should be 'He already knows'). You use a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. There are also punctuation issues, such as missing commas after introductory phrases and run-on sentences. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms after 'look forward to' will help improve your accuracy significantly.
