A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Anil,
I have got your message that you are coming to my house tomorrow by train, and I was so excited to welcome you; however, I am afraid to inform you that I will not be here at the moment when you arrive due to some personal issues.
I have made some prior arrangements, which will eventually help you when you reach here. Firstly, in order to unlock the door, I have given one key to receptionist, so he will help you on it. Secondly, I hope you will love my surprise a pizza which I am going to prepare for you. Let me know how was that !
The main hurdle you will face is to reach to my house, but no worries brother, I have already booked Uber for you, so it will take you here.
Now I am going to share you fascinating news. Once I arrive home, we are going to restaurant and then will go to watch movie. I know you will love it.
Drop me a line whenever you get a chance and let me know what you think.
Regards,
Deep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is a strength. You explained the key arrangement, provided instructions for the journey, and suggested evening activities. However, the development of these points is somewhat thin. For instance, the instruction on how to get from the station is vague; simply stating you booked an Uber does not provide the relative with the necessary information to navigate the station or meet the driver. Additionally, the tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a family member, though some phrasing is slightly unnatural. To improve, ensure that each bullet point is fully expanded with practical, realistic details that would be useful in a real-life scenario.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing, which helps the reader follow your message. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Now', which effectively signal the transition between ideas. However, some of the linking is a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition from discussing the key to the pizza surprise feels abrupt. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'it', 'this') is always clear would help improve the overall flow and cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using words like 'fascinating', 'hurdle', and 'arrangements'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that slightly hinder the naturalness of the expression. For example, 'I have given one key to receptionist' is missing an article, and 'help you on it' is not a standard idiomatic expression. Additionally, 'share you fascinating news' should be 'share some fascinating news with you'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations and articles to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am afraid to inform you that I will not be here'. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the receptionist') and prepositions ('reach to my house' should be 'reach my house'). Some verb tense usage is also slightly awkward, such as 'let me know how was that', which should be 'let me know how it was'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
