IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mark,

I hope you are doing great today and you are enjoying journey.

I know you are coming to my city and going to stay with me. Its been 2 full years since I met you on Susan marriage and then I shifted to another city.

I was hoping that I should pick you personally but it is not looking possible because I have to go to another city by night and I may not come home for next 2 days. However, I have done some things for you which may assist you in my place.

My house address which you already have, has a combination lock which is 1589 and I put spare keys under mat. In house, I have made a room for you contains bed and other services like WIFI.

The route to my house is way more simple. Grab bus no 8 from station and when you arrive to Mount Barrie station, walk for 5 min east and return left to Marine Drive, you will find my house there.

I hope you would find my house there.

Your friend,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions, and suggesting evening plans. However, the response is incomplete regarding the final bullet point. While you mention you will be away for two days, you fail to suggest what you could do together that evening, which is a specific requirement of the task. Additionally, the tone is somewhat inconsistent for a letter to a family member, occasionally sounding a bit formal or disjointed. To improve, ensure that every part of the prompt is explicitly answered with sufficient detail to fully satisfy the reader's needs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the greeting to the arrangements, directions, and finally the closing. Paragraphing is used, though the structure is a bit fragmented. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Although', but the flow between sentences can be improved. Some transitions feel mechanical, and the referencing (e.g., 'my house address which you already have') is clear but could be more naturally integrated. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but the logical flow between ideas could be smoother to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'combination lock' and 'personally'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and minor errors, such as 'Susan marriage' (should be 'Susan's wedding') and 'return left' (should be 'turn left'). The phrase 'way more simple' is also slightly informal and imprecise. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your word choices are grammatically accurate in context. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would also help make the letter more engaging.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'Its been 2 full years' (missing apostrophe), 'contains bed' (missing article), and 'I hope you would find my house there' (tense usage). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and consistent verb tense control, especially when discussing future arrangements.
