IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Raman,

I hope you are doing well. I am very happy to see you soon. I am writing this to inform you that I have urgent work to do at the same time when you will come so I handover the keys to my Neighbour and she will prepare the food for you.

Also, to get the train the station is at the opposite side of the airport and there is a 45 train no that goes directly to the house so you have to get off at the last stop of the train then my neighbour will help you.

I will be home around the same time when you will be arriving to the home after meeting we will be going to the Scarborough Town Center for shopping after that having a dinner at near by restaurant together I will try my best to reach home early.

I look forward to help you if you need any help for address related or anything else.

Yours faithfully,

Rajdeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: key arrangements, directions, and evening plans. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the directions provided are quite confusing (e.g., '45 train no that goes directly to the house'), and the explanation of your arrival time is contradictory, as you state you will be home at the same time as the guest but then say you will try to reach home early. To improve, ensure your instructions are clear enough for a reader to follow and provide more logical consistency in your narrative.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which is good practice. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally disjointed. You rely on simple connectors like 'also' and 'and', and some transitions are abrupt. For instance, the jump from discussing the train to your arrival time lacks a smooth logical bridge. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices, such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition to this', would help the ideas progress more naturally. Additionally, the closing 'Yours faithfully' is inappropriate for a family member; 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes' would be more suitable for a relative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some functional phrases like 'inform you' and 'look forward to'. However, there is a lack of variety and some imprecise word choices, such as 'handover' (should be 'handed over') and 'at near by restaurant' (should be 'at a nearby restaurant'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more natural collocations and descriptive language related to travel and social arrangements, rather than relying on basic, repetitive sentence structures.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, particularly with verb tenses and prepositions. Examples include 'I am very happy to see you soon' (should be 'to see you'), 'I handover' (should be 'I have handed over'), and 'at the same time when you will come' (should be 'at the same time as your arrival'). Additionally, some sentences are run-on or lack necessary articles, such as 'the station is at the opposite side'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall fluency of your writing.
