IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Hemant,

Hello sis! I hope this letter finds you in radiant health and best of spirits. I am glad to know that you are coming to my place to stay along with me.

Dearie, as you are coming on 27th of this month, I need to attend an urgent meeting at office that day.

I have a spare key of my house. I will not only put that key under the door mat of my house but also I will place a large pot there for safety. When you will reach, you will not face any difficulty, to get into the house.

Pal, although you know my place, it is difficult to find the house easily as the city changes a lot. I have booked a cab for you that will pick you up from the train station. The registered number of taxi is NH 12 Z 5467.

My dear sis, I will be at home by 7 O' clock in the evening. Firstly we will definitely have tea together and gossip a lot. I have so much to tell you about my life. Then we will go for movie running at Neelam theatre and afterwards we will dine out.

Hoping to see you soon

With love

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explained the key arrangement, provided specific instructions regarding the cab for transport, and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and informal register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt, ensuring the reader understands exactly what is expected. No parts of the task were omitted, and the information provided is sufficient to meet the requirements of a General Training Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'although', 'firstly', and 'afterwards', to link your sentences and ideas. However, the transition between the key arrangement and the transport instructions could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using informal and natural expressions like 'radiant health', 'best of spirits', and 'gossip a lot'. While the vocabulary is generally effective, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or varied collocations. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. The language used is well-suited to the informal context of writing to a family member, and the tone remains consistent throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are clear and grammatically accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I have a spare key of my house' (should be 'to my house') and 'When you will reach' (should be 'When you reach'). Additionally, '7 O' clock' should be written as '7 o'clock'. Despite these minor errors, your control of grammar is good, and the meaning is never obscured. The variety of structures used is sufficient for this task, and the punctuation is generally handled well.
