IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Annie,

I hope this letter finds you in radiant health and best of spirits. I am extremely happy to hear that you will visit my place on thuesday evening by Shtabdi Express. I want to tell you ahead, that I have an important meeting with international deligates on the day of your arrival. Unfortunately, I am not available to pick you up from the station.

However, you don't have to worry at all, as I already booked a taxi for you that will get you to the house. The door has a modern digital lock-up system, so you can use 9942 to unlock it. I will prepare your favourite garlic sandwich with mint-lemonade. You can refresh and have a rest.

In the evening, around 5pm I will come to you than we will go for a movie night in our favourite mall. I also applied for my weekdays off as we will share our college time nostalgic memories and will share our future plans.

Hope to see you soon,

Yours lovingly,

Kamalpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for the taxi, and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and personal style throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are logically consistent; for instance, you mention the arrival is in the morning, but you refer to the 'thuesday evening' arrival, which creates a slight contradiction. Overall, the response is purposeful and fully meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'In the evening' to transition between points. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that referencing is precise. For example, in the sentence 'I will come to you than we will go', the word 'than' is used incorrectly as a conjunction; 'then' would be the correct choice to show sequence. Overall, the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a personal letter, such as 'radiant health', 'nostalgic memories', and 'digital lock-up system'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'thuesday' (Tuesday), 'deligates' (delegates), and 'Shtabdi' (Shatabdi), which do not impede communication but suggest a need for more careful proofreading. You use some idiomatic expressions effectively, which adds a natural feel to your writing. To improve, focus on ensuring that word choices are precise and spelling is accurate, as these small errors prevent the vocabulary from being considered highly flexible or sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I already booked' (should be 'I have already booked'), 'I will come to you than' (should be 'then'), and 'share our college time nostalgic memories' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To achieve a higher band, focus on using the present perfect tense correctly for recent actions and refining your sentence construction to avoid awkward phrasing.
