IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Karan,

I hope you are doing well! how is your planning going on.

I'm writing to inform you about the arrangements i made for your welcoming. I am really pleased to meet you after long period. Sadly, i would not be there when you reach, perhaps you can accumulate keys from my neighbour and they, understandably, will be responsible for your morning breakfast and a lunch. In evening, although, i would be there, around 6 o'clock.

As i aware that you are travelling by public transport. The station is stone throw away from our house. So, i believe that you will not face any challenges. Apart from it, i will book cab for you, which is not as much as expensive. Just give me a call to arrange a taxi for you. Eventually, I organized everything explicitly including trips, meals and above all, indoor activities.

I couldn't wait. Anyways, if you need any assistance let me know.

Yours faithfully,

Anu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: key arrangements, directions, and evening plans. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the instruction to explain how to get from the station to the house is handled vaguely by saying it is a 'stone's throw away' and offering a taxi. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a family member, though the closing 'Yours faithfully' is incorrect for a relative; 'Yours affectionately' or 'Best wishes' would be more suitable. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the content could be more detailed to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your message. You use some cohesive devices like 'Apart from it' and 'Eventually', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural in context. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the key arrangements to travel instructions and finally to evening plans. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'they' referring to the neighbors) is always unambiguous. The paragraphing is sufficient for this task type.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'inform', 'arrangements', and 'explicitly'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices that hinder naturalness, such as 'accumulate keys' (instead of 'pick up' or 'collect') and 'not as much as expensive' (which is grammatically incorrect and unnatural). The phrase 'stone throw away' is a good idiom, but it is missing the article 'a'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, you need to work on more precise word choices and natural collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'how is your planning going on' (missing capitalization and incorrect preposition), 'i would not be there' (should be 'I won't be'), and 'As i aware' (missing the verb 'am'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of lowercase 'i' instead of 'I'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the text. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization.
