IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Hello, Sumit,

I hope that you are well. I'm waiting to meet you this week weekend. Unfortunately, I will not be at home when you will arrive.

As you know that I always get free from my work after 8Pm, so I can not welcome you when you will reach home. But, when you arrive at home, you can go to house number 23 where you need to tell my name and She'll give you the key of the house.

There are many options to get home from station but I would suggest you to pick up a metro train service so that you do not have to face the rush of people and it will take you home faster than other transportation mode.

When I arrive home, we will enjoy a delicious dinner together and a long conversation about family matters and my lifestyle. Last but not least we would also play the video game which you like.

Best wishes

Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement (collecting it from house number 23), provided directions (suggesting the metro), and outlined your evening plans. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanations are slightly more detailed; for instance, you could have provided a specific street name or a clearer description of the metro route to make the instructions more practical. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'but', 'so', and 'when', which help connect your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly. Some sentences feel slightly disjointed, and the transition between the key collection and the transport advice could be smoother. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use appropriate terms like 'transportation mode', 'delicious dinner', and 'lifestyle'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'get free from my work' (should be 'finish work') and 'pick up a metro train service' (should be 'take the metro'). While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more natural collocations. To improve, try to incorporate more idiomatic expressions or precise vocabulary related to travel and social arrangements to demonstrate a wider range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I'm waiting to meet you this week weekend' (redundant), 'As you know that I always' (unnecessary 'that'), and 'the key of the house' (should be 'the house key'). Additionally, there are tense inconsistencies, such as 'when you will arrive' (should be 'when you arrive'). While these errors are frequent, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage in future clauses will help improve your score.
