IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Tom,
I hope you are doing well. I am very excited to meet you. You will be arriving in the morning on July 29. Unfortunately, I have to attend an important board meeting. Therefore, I leave house keys in the hanging flower pot right next to the main door. I have prepared breakfast and lunch for you, and they will be in the fridge.
The roads are quite busy in the morning. Moreover, to get to my house from the train station, you have to turn left from the main station gate and you will find plenty of taxis outside the station. Also, I can book a taxi for you, if you send me your location after reaching the train station.
I will be home around 5 pm, and I will call you at least half an hour before leaving my workplace so that you have enough time to get ready for dinner. Furthermore, if you like then we can play basketball.
Until then. take care.
Yours sincerely,
Reena

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly explained the key arrangement (the flower pot), provided directions from the station, and specified your arrival time along with a suggestion for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'arrangements'—for instance, mentioning if there is a spare key or if a neighbor is aware—to provide more depth to your ideas. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. While these are functional, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences feels more natural. The use of referencing (e.g., 'the station', 'my house') is clear and helps the reader follow the narrative without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'attend an important board meeting' and 'plenty of taxis' are used correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks a wider variety of less common or more precise lexical items. To improve, try to incorporate more descriptive adjectives or idiomatic expressions that would be natural in a letter to a relative. For example, instead of 'quite busy', you could use 'congested' or 'hectic'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I leave house keys' (should be 'I will leave the house keys') and 'Until then. take care' (the period after 'then' is a punctuation error). Despite these, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, focus on ensuring consistent verb tense usage when discussing future arrangements and refine your punctuation to ensure sentences are correctly delimited.
