IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.
explain arrangements you have made for them to have keys and get into the house
tell your relative how to get from the train station to your house
say when you will be home and suggest what you could do together that evening
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sam
I am very excited that you are coming to stay with me. When you arrive, we will have a short trip to the city museum; after that, we will go for a movie night. You can find the keys in the letterbox outside the house, as I will not be able to see you then due to my business meeting.
When you check out the train station, you can book a ride by visiting the website 'cheaprides.in'. It will hardly take twenty minutes to reach the destination. The house is located near the road with a black door and a beautiful garden in the front.
I will see you in the evening, once I finish my meeting. I've already made some snacks and juice for you; you can enjoy them. We'll go to the park near my house to have some quality time together.
May you have a safe journey.
See you soon,
Dabby.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions, and suggesting evening plans. However, the development of these points is somewhat uneven. For instance, the directions provided are quite vague; simply mentioning a 'black door' and a 'beautiful garden' might not be sufficient for someone unfamiliar with the area. Additionally, the tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a family member, though the transition between the arrival arrangements and the evening plans could be more fluid. To improve, ensure that your instructions are practical and easy to follow, and try to expand slightly more on the 'why' or 'how' of your suggestions to fully develop your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from arrival logistics to evening plans. Paragraphing is used to separate these distinct topics, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'after that' and 'once I finish', to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between the train station directions and the house description could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the progression between sentences within paragraphs feels more natural and less like a list of instructions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'destination', 'quality time', and 'arrangements'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for a semi-formal or informal letter. There are no significant spelling errors, and your word choices are clear. To improve, try to incorporate more precise or descriptive vocabulary. For example, instead of 'short trip', you could use 'brief excursion', and instead of 'book a ride', you might use 'arrange a taxi service'. Expanding your range of collocations will help you convey your message with more sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'When you arrive, we will have...' and 'I've already made some snacks...'. Most of your sentences are grammatically accurate, and your punctuation is generally correct. There are no major errors that impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If you find it difficult to locate the house, please call me') or passive voice constructions, to demonstrate greater control and flexibility in your writing.
