IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hii Mohan,

I hope you are doing well. It is great to see you after a long time as you shared an excited news on last week that you will going to make a trip to my residence. I’m just writing to give you a message that I will be in a meeting on that morning that already announced by my boss therefore we will meet in the evening.

As I know its your first trip to my town so my absence will not make you nervous therefore I did some arrangements in advance like I asked someone from my neighbour who will be there to provide to help with food and other stuff like how to use washroom, electronic devices like lights and fans. I know you will be tried after a long journey so i have cleaned up a room where you can do relax.

As my house is little far away from the station so there will be one of my friend who will pick you and drop at my place therefore don’t be panic about it.

My meeting will be last for about 7 hours since its regarding to our latest project that my company will going to introduce in next year so that it runs bit longer.

I am eagerly awaiting to meet you. Stay safe.

With regards

Bhagwant.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for the train station, and mentioned your arrival time. However, the response is slightly lacking in detail regarding the third bullet point; while you mention you will be home in the evening, you did not explicitly suggest an activity to do together, which was a specific requirement of the task. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a family member, though some parts feel a bit repetitive regarding your work meeting. To improve, ensure every part of the prompt is fully developed with specific suggestions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'As I know' and 'As my house is', but the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly awkward phrasing. The transition between the meeting details and the arrival instructions could be smoother. While the paragraphing is sufficient, the logical progression is sometimes hindered by the repetitive nature of the sentences. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition') would help improve the overall flow and cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some functional phrases, but there is a reliance on basic or slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'shared an excited news' (should be 'exciting news') and 'do relax' (should be 'relax'). There are also some minor word-choice errors, such as 'tried' instead of 'tired' and 'don't be panic' instead of 'don't panic'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary and ensuring collocations are natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'you will going to make' (should be 'you are going to make'), 'that already announced by my boss' (missing 'was'), and 'my company will going to introduce' (should be 'is going to'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses, auxiliary verbs, and sentence construction to ensure your writing is more grammatically sound.
