Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear aunt,
I am writing to let you know that I will be closing a bit late today which would be towards in the evening since your train will be landing this morning.
I have informed my neighbor Mrs Dorris. she is the woman you spoke to on phone the last time you called. I dropped the keys to my apartment with her to give you when you arrive
Aunt, I'm so sorry that I would not be able to come and pick at the station due to my tight schedule today. My house is very close to where the train will stop. It just five kilometer walk from that spot. You will see a two storey biuilding painted brown and cream colour beside it is my house a bugalow building.
I would definitely arrive home before eight to be precised. I have bought your favorite soup ingredients yesterday which I stored in the refrigerator. To be honest, I would love will cook it together in order to learn how to prepare it.
I am really eager to see you.
Yours sincerly,
Yesteri.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining the key arrangements, providing directions from the station, and suggesting an evening activity. The tone is appropriate for a letter to an aunt, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout. However, some details are slightly underdeveloped; for instance, the directions are a bit confusing, as you mention a 'five kilometer walk' which is quite long for someone arriving by train, and the description of the house could be more precise. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I have informed' and 'I would definitely arrive' to link your ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the abrupt start to the second paragraph. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, which supports the overall coherence of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use some relevant terms like 'tight schedule', 'ingredients', and 'refrigerator'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'biuilding' and 'sincerly', and some awkward word choices like 'pick at the station' instead of 'pick you up'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more attention to spelling and common collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more varied descriptive language would help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which would be towards in the evening', 'it just five kilometer walk', and 'I would love will cook it'. These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Additionally, ensure that your verb tenses are consistent, as there are some slips in tense usage throughout the letter.
