Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear John,
"It's been a little while since we last connected, and I was just thinking of you! I trust everything is going smoothly on your end."
I am writing to inform you that yesterday I received your email, and I am very excited that you are coming to stay with me. However, I already planned several things that we can do together. Firstly, I am sorry, but I am not able to pick you up from the railway station because tomorrow I have an important business meeting. Moreover, my career will be based on this meeting because tomorrow some overseas clients will attend this meeting, and they don't understand our language, so I am the only person in the organisation who knows French. Additionally, my boss promised me that if we get this deal, he will promote me to CEO of the company. Furthermore, I have already talked with one of my friends, Ram, and he will pick you up from the railway station around 10:00 am when your train arrives. I will give my house keys to my friend so that you can get into the house, and I will prepare food for you so that you can eat it and take a nap so that you feel refreshed.
Nonetheless, my meeting will be finished around 12:00 PM, and I will come back home around 1:00 PM. After that, we can visit our famous temple and shopping malls. We will eat our favourite food to make these moments special.
Can't wait to see you!
Kind Regards,
Sargun

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for the train station, and suggested evening activities. However, the response contains a significant amount of irrelevant information regarding your career, the business meeting, and the potential promotion to CEO. This distracts from the purpose of the letter and makes the tone somewhat unnatural for a message to a family member. While the task requirements are met, the focus should remain on the visitor's arrival rather than detailed professional justifications. To improve, ensure your content remains relevant to the specific scenario provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, and the progression of ideas is generally clear. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore'. However, the use of these connectors is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, which occasionally makes the flow feel forced. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the logistical details from the social plans. To reach a higher band, try to use more subtle linking phrases and ensure that the transition between your personal situation and the visitor's arrival is smoother and less abrupt.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using phrases like 'refreshed', 'special moments', and 'organisational'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'my career will be based on this meeting', which is slightly unnatural. You successfully convey your meaning throughout the letter. To improve, try to incorporate more natural collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for a friendly letter. Avoid overly formal or business-oriented language when writing to a family member, as it creates a slight mismatch in tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are grammatically accurate, and your meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'my meeting will be finished' (passive voice is acceptable but 'will finish' is more natural) and 'I already planned' (should be 'I have already planned'). Punctuation is generally correct. To achieve a higher score, focus on using a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, and ensure consistent use of verb tenses when discussing future arrangements.
