Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sandal,
I hope you're doing well. I am delighted to know that you're coming to stay with me at London. As you've planned to come by train in the morning, unfortunately I am unavilable at home in the morning.
I have made some arrangements for you to get access into the house. Particularly, the keys would be located under the doormats near the entrance, and the colour of the key to enter in the house is blue. Apart from this, you could open the windows for fresh air because my air-conditioner is not working. In addition, the food will be stored in the fridge, if you will feel hungry, don't feel shy.
For your convenience to get from the train station to my house, firstly you take book a taxi and I am going to send you my home address. You can give this address to the taxi driver, he will drive you at my place.
I would be available in the evening and I have planned something special for you. I wanted to show you supermarket in the evening and planning to visit new restaurant that is opened one week ago and serving delicious food. Moreover, our community has been organising the sport event at night, I hope you will enjot it because the entrance is fee for viewers.
Don't forget to reply me. I am eagerly waiting to extend my hospitality towards you.
Take care,
Deepika

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for the taxi, and suggested evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member. However, some ideas could be more naturally developed; for instance, the instruction to 'open the windows' because the air-conditioner is broken is a bit unusual for a guest arrival. Additionally, the suggestion to visit a supermarket as a special evening activity is slightly underwhelming. To reach a higher band, ensure that all suggestions are fully relevant and logically presented to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this', 'In addition', and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly forced. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics, which helps the reader follow your message easily. Overall, the structure is coherent, but more variety in linking words would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'hospitality', 'convenience', and 'delighted'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'take book a taxi' (a grammatical slip) and 'drive you at my place' (should be 'to my place'). You also have some spelling errors like 'unavilable' and 'enjot'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and using more precise collocations would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I am unavilable at home in the morning' (should be 'I will be unavailable'), 'if you will feel hungry' (should be 'if you feel hungry'), and 'the entrance is fee' (should be 'free'). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band.
