IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sam,

I am writing to inform that I will not be at home in the morning. Believe me, I have to leave in the early morning for a very important business meeting that will end till noon.

Honestly, I am really glad that you're visiting me. Though, I am not available at home, but I have putted the home keys in the mail box. You can find the black mail box easily as it is fixed on the left side of entrance. I have prepared fillings for sandwich and kept on the top shelve of the fridge. I baked fresh breads in the morning that I have kept on the dining table and sauces are there too.

One of the most important things is to arrange taxi as there is no tram service due to the ongoing track work. So, I have pre-booked a taxi that will arrive at sharp 10:00 am. You may contact the driver by phone at [redacted phone].

As soon as the meeting will end, I will come back straight to the home and then we can spend time together. We will order the dinner from our favourite restaurant and we will watch a movie too.

Take care, and I hope to see you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Daler Arora

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific instructions for the taxi, and outlined your plans for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. The response is fully functional and meets the requirements of the task effectively. No information is missing, and the instructions are easy to follow for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow the information easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As soon as' and 'Though', which help connect your ideas. However, the transition between the first and second paragraphs could be smoother, and some of the linking phrases are slightly repetitive. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the structure is appropriate for a personal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'putted' (should be 'put') and 'fillings for sandwich' (should be 'sandwich fillings'). You also use 'fresh breads', where 'bread' is typically an uncountable noun. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more attention to collocations and word forms. Using more precise vocabulary would elevate the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing to inform that I will not be at home' (missing 'you'), 'end till noon' (should be 'until'), and 'at sharp 10:00 am' (should be 'at 10:00 am sharp'). Additionally, 'the home' is used incorrectly in 'come back straight to the home' (should be 'come straight home'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. Increasing your control over articles and prepositions will improve your score.
