IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sam,

I am writing this to inform you that I won't be able to pick up you at the station as, I have an important office event that I needs to attend but, I will be home by evening.

I know you are new to this city but the route to my home is very straight-forward. When you get off from a train, you need to look for a yellow sign for Subway bus which you can get easily by walking approximately 500 m left from the station. Get off in the 3 number bus and get off at " Mavis Road", walk across the street and the look for green color house number 14.

I would be leaving house keys in the mail box for your easy access. Also, I will make some light snacks and leave in fridge for you. When I return back in the evening, I am planning to go at lakeside nearby and watch beautiful sunset. We can go out for a movie and dinner later at night.

I hope you would be okay with my plan and if there you find any difficulty I would be available on call.

See you very soon.

Love

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements, provided specific directions from the station to your home, and outlined your plans for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all instructions are followed with complete accuracy, such as avoiding minor inconsistencies in the plan (e.g., mentioning snacks in the fridge while also suggesting dinner out).

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'also', 'when', and 'but' to link ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the directions and the key arrangements could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different topics. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a more natural progression of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'straight-forward', 'approximately', and 'access'. There are some minor word choice errors, such as 'pick up you' instead of 'pick you up' and 'return back' (which is redundant). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more varied collocations and avoiding redundant phrasing would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I needs to attend' (subject-verb agreement), 'get off from a train' (unnecessary preposition), and 'in the 3 number bus' (incorrect phrasing). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions will significantly improve your accuracy.
