A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

How's life treating you, my friend? I hope you're doing well and staying positive. I'm so delighted to hear that you're going to stay with me. As you mentioned to me arrival is going to be on the 17th of this month around 11 0'clock in the morning, but the problem is that I have an office meeting at that time, which I cannot ignore, so you might be face difficulty.

I have made arrangements for you such as I will drop my house keys at my neighbour's home, so you can pick from them. Also, I already told about you to them. They will assist you if anything happens. Moreover, you don't have to worry about journey, as I have arrange taxi for you.

Besides this, I will be at home around 6 in the evening and we'll go to Gage park to spend our quality of time and I also booked a table at four star restaurant for us.

I can't wait to see you.

Loving,

Manpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You explained the key arrangements, provided instructions for the journey, and suggested evening plans. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. For instance, the instructions on how to get from the station to your house are missing; you only mentioned that you arranged a taxi, but you did not explain the route or how the relative would find the taxi. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are fully developed with sufficient detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, and the progression of ideas is clear. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'Moreover', and 'Besides this' to link your sentences. While these are functional, the paragraphing is a bit fragmented, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect your ideas more naturally. The overall structure is appropriate for a personal letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'delighted', 'arrangements', and 'assist'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'spend our quality of time' (should be 'spend some quality time') and 'booked a table at four star restaurant' (missing an article). You also rely on some repetitive phrasing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure that articles and prepositions are used correctly to enhance the naturalness of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'you might be face difficulty' (should be 'you might face difficulty'), 'I have arrange taxi' (should be 'I have arranged a taxi'), and 'I already told about you to them' (should be 'I have already told them about you'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of verb tenses to improve your accuracy.
