IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sarah,

I'm really happy that you are coming to stay with me, and I'm sorry that I won't be home when you arrive. Don't worry, though, I have made all the necessary arrangements for you to get into the house.

I will leave a spare key with my neighbour, Mrs. Sharma, who lives in the house next door. When you arrive, just nock on her door, and tell her that you are my relative. She will give you the key and show you where to entre the house. You can make yourself comfortable and relax until I get home.

As for getting here from the train station, you can take an auto-rickshaw from outside the station. It should take around 15 minutes to reach my house. I have also sent you my address and location on your phone, so you can show it to the driver. If you have any difficulty finding the place, just give me a call.

I should be home by around 6:30 pm. In the evening. we could have dinner at a nearby restaurant and then go for a walk around the local market.

I am looking forward to seeing you,

Best wishes,

Lovepreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement with your neighbour, provided practical instructions for the commute from the station, and proposed a specific plan for the evening. The tone is consistently appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and easy to follow, ensuring the reader knows exactly what to do upon arrival. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the visit. You use clear transitions such as 'As for getting here' and 'In the evening' to guide the reader through the information. The use of cohesive devices is natural and effective, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a personal letter. The flow of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between the sentences is clear, making the text very easy to read and follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this informal context, such as 'necessary arrangements', 'make yourself comfortable', and 'local market'. There are a few minor spelling errors, specifically 'nock' (knock) and 'entre' (enter), which are noticeable but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise or descriptive collocations. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and you demonstrate good control over punctuation and verb tenses. There is a minor punctuation error in the final paragraph ('In the evening. we could...'), where a period is used instead of a comma. However, these are rare slips that do not affect the clarity of your writing. Your control over complex structures is consistent and accurate.
