IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Hello Suhani,

Hope you are doing well. I was delighted to hear that you'll be visiting soon. Unfortunately, I will be at work by the time you will arrive. However, I have made few arrangements so you will not feel any trouble while getting in.

I have left a spare key with my next-door neighbor, Ms. Smith, who has kindly agreed to let you in. She will be expecting you, so simply just knock on her door and introduce yourself. Once you get the key, make yourself at home.

To reach into my apartment, when you arrive at the train station take the exit 3D which will take you to the bus stop, then hop on bus no. 15 to East Avenue. By reaching at the last stop you need to get off the bus and walk straight into the alley and look for the yellow building with bush fences from there you will be able to enter into the building.

I'll be home by around 6:30 p.m. After I've had a chance to freshen up, we could order some takeaway, watch a movie, or simply sit on the balcony and catch up on everything we've missed. I'm sure we'll have a wonderful evening together.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangements with your neighbor, provided specific directions from the train station, and suggested evening activities. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully covered all requirements of the task, ensuring the reader knows exactly what to do upon arrival and what to expect later in the day.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which makes the information easy to follow. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Once you get the key', and 'After I've had a chance to freshen up' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow of information from the arrival process to the evening plans is smooth and natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task. Phrases like 'made few arrangements', 'kindly agreed', and 'freshen up' are used naturally. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'reach into my apartment' (should be 'reach my apartment') and 'bush fences' (perhaps 'hedges' would be more natural). However, these do not impede communication. You successfully use a variety of words to describe the directions and the social plans, showing sufficient flexibility to convey your meaning precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional and temporal clauses effectively, such as 'by the time you will arrive' and 'Once you get the key'. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I have made few arrangements' (should be 'a few') and 'By reaching at the last stop' (should be 'Upon reaching the last stop'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. Punctuation is generally accurate and supports the readability of the text.
