IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Hello Suhani,

Hope you are doing well. I am so excited for your visit. Unfortunately, I will be at work at that time but I have already made arrangements so that you will not feel difficult to get into my house.

I have left a spare key with my neighbor, Ms. Smith, who lives next door in the House no. 14. She has kindly agreed to let you in, so just knock on her door and introduce yourself. Once you get the key, make yourself at home.

To reach my house, from the train station exit on the Oak street and from there catch the bus no. 10 to Green Avenue and get off on the Brooks Avenue. It is only five- minutes walk from the stop. If you prefer, you can also book a taxi or cab which will only take 15 minutes from the train station to my house depending on the traffic.

I will be arriving at home by 6 p.m. We could go out for dinner in the nearby newly opened Indian restaurant or we can just order online and relax at home.

Waiting to see you soon!

Regards,

Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement with your neighbor, provided specific directions from the train station, and suggested appropriate evening activities. The tone is consistently friendly and appropriate for a letter to a family member. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively, ensuring the reader has all the necessary information for their arrival.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the key arrangement to directions and finally to evening plans. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Once you get the key' and 'If you prefer', which help guide the reader through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct topics, making the letter easy to follow and coherent throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a semi-formal or informal letter. Phrases like 'make yourself at home' and 'depending on the traffic' are natural and accurate. While the vocabulary is sufficient and clear, it remains somewhat functional. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more varied or precise descriptive language. There are no significant errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication, and the tone is maintained consistently throughout the piece.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'you will not feel difficult to get into my house' (which would be more naturally phrased as 'you won't have any difficulty getting into my house') and 'five- minutes walk' (which should be 'five-minute walk'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause any confusion for the reader. Your control over punctuation and sentence construction is solid.
