IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A family member is coming to stay with you. He/she will be arriving by train in the morning, but you won’t be home until the evening.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Hello Suhani,

Hope you are doing well. I am so excited for your visit. Unfortunately, I will be at work at that time but I have already made arrangements so that you will not find it difficult to get into my house.

I have left a spare key with my neighbor, Ms. Smith, who lives next door in House No. 14. She has kindly agreed to let you in, so just knock on her door and introduce yourself. Once you get the key, make yourself at home.

To reach my house, from the train station exit on Oak Street and from there catch bus No. 10 to Green Avenue and get off on Brooks Avenue. It is only five minutes walk from the stop. If you prefer, you can also book a taxi or cab which will only take 15 minutes from the train station to my house depending on the traffic.

I will be arriving at home by 6 p.m. We could go out for dinner in the newly opened Indian restaurant nearby or we can just order online and relax at home.

Waiting to see you soon!

Regards,

Muskan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained the key arrangement with your neighbor, provided specific directions from the train station, and suggested a concrete plan for the evening. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a family member, maintaining a friendly and helpful register throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the response is fully relevant to the task requirements. You have provided a complete and coherent response that fulfills the communicative purpose of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Once you get the key', 'To reach my house', and 'If you prefer', which help to link your sentences and paragraphs smoothly. The use of paragraphing is effective, and the overall structure is clear and professional. The flow of information is natural and supports the reader's understanding of the instructions provided.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for this informal/semi-formal context. Phrases like 'make yourself at home', 'kindly agreed', and 'depending on the traffic' are natural and accurate. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise, it is mostly functional. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or spelling, and the language used is consistently clear and effective for the purpose of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you have used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the use of conditional structures ('If you prefer, you can also...') and time clauses ('Once you get the key...') demonstrates good control. There are very few errors; one minor point is 'arriving at home' which is more naturally phrased as 'arriving home'. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips do not impede communication or cause any confusion for the reader.
